Team Drift at Lydd - Alison Smith

Team Drift Event, November 07, Lydd International Raceway

Lydd was host to yet another fantastic drift display last weekend, for oh so many reasons!

The Team Drift Challenge was exactly what was needed to close the season, enjoyable for both the spectators and those behind the steering wheels.

Running the course in reverse to the ‘usual’, the drivers were in teams of two or three to drift the circuit in as much unity and precision as possible. Judges looked for drivers maintaining an even close distance between each other throughout the run, as well as impressive angles and avoidance of straightening up mid-drift.

Each team was awarded 100 points at the start of their run, and were deducted points for errors made. Highest score of the day was a 92 point run from ‘Team Weak’ aka Beezy and Dan from Kent. The local lads were consistent throughout all their runs, displaying drifting that was obscenely close and held sexual amounts of lock! Been practising boys?

Other significant drives were those from Team SS1 and the lovely Lochstop gents, who had travelled all the way from Scotland specifically for the event. Both teams drove well through the event, maintaining an even distance and employing good strategies in the choice of lead driver and approach.

In Team SS2, James Hudson struggled with the principle of ‘team-work’ by his own admission, using all the talents (and all the RB26 powers) we’ve come to expect from him, but leaving his poor team-mate behind! They corrected that by making James the following driver in the next run, and this improved their style considerably. Not enough to carry them all the way through the knock-out rounds though, falling short in the top eight.

Not much spinning was to be seen, which was fantastic given the ‘open entry’ format of the event. Clearly this is an indication that our drivers are becoming much more precise and confident in the competitive events. Or at least, that’s what the judges were thinking prior to the Driftworks BMW’s taking to the circuit! Not much drifting, but massively entertaining none-the-less! Bargetastic!

The final was as thrilling as we’d hoped. With borrowed cars, Team Ireland (Mark & Ian Coyne), ended up in twin drift battles against Team Weak. In the first run, Dan won with a 6/4, and again in his second run with an 8/2.  Mark won in his runs against Beezy with a 10/0 and 7/3, meaning the collective scores for the teams were 17 to Team Weak, and 23 to Team Ireland.

A big well done therefore to the Coyne’s, and we hope that more events will be run in this now ‘tried and tested’ format!
