A welded diff is just what it says, welded solid so both wheels turn together. A LSD has still got the capability to turn the wheels at slightly different speeds ie: when turning. You will find with a welded diff you will hear one tyre trying to spin as it tries to keep up with the other tyre when turning. With a LSD it will still spin both wheels if provoked, but only really when needed. Hope this explains it a little better.
