Hi Steve,
After chatting with 'Scrutineer', and subsequently talking over the safety implications with our insurance company, it seems highly unlikely that the Safety21 cages will be passed for 2007.
Also other areas worth noting at this stage are:
1. Expandable/adjustable/removeable side bars that some people have fitted will have to be seam welded and not tacked into place once adjusted.
2. Padding will be required around any cage area that is close to the driver and/or the crash helmet. Exact distance(s) to be confirmed.
3. Safety harness's behind the seats will not be able to have an angle no more than 15 degrees from horizontal from where they exit the seat above from the drivers shoulder areas. Preferential fitment for these will be to a cross bar running behind the front seats and between the main cage uprights.
4. Firewalls must be installed.
5. Regulations on approved crash helmets will be available soon.
The above fall inline with general current motorsport safety standards and regulations that are accepted across the board and within the motorsport industry.
Insurance and safety is an area we are not prepared to compromise and this year has shown us what we are doing is seen to be professional and has the drivers safety as the number one issue.
Safety costs money unfortunately and these areas are not meant to be off putting or demeaning to Drifting but as we are the main guys in the spotlight around Europe we have a responsibility to the scene to ensure our actions are seen to be 100% correct.
Please don't try to draw us on the why's and wherefore's as we are quite aware of these but rememeber we do not kid ourselves that there is any such thing as safe motorsport, and there never will be
More information to follow.
