the material of a hemet is the decider about painting helmets - have a look on here :

they also confirm that the ACU gold is irrelevent as far as car motorsport goes in that they say on there that the gold can be applied to BS6658-85 type B helmets which are purely bike helmets and not suitable for car motorsport.... so therefore the gold label means nothing to us
If you get the helmet from a reputable supplier its worth asking them about what you can use for painting ......but above all else
never paint over or remove the approval sticker
even on a brand new £500 helmet if the standard sticker is not there or not readable then the helmet cannot be used - the scrutineer has to actually see the label to approve it
