I can't see how that'd mean it won't work - we're all assuming we'd be using steepish downhills, so it'd be fine. And anyway, you can get traction from them, but just keep spinning up and the vehicle will speed up.
The whole 'changing the sprocket' to make it high gearing is a good idea - you saw the way those guys were twiddling, with high gearing you could pedal properly.
