No. I have been using mine for SEVEN YEARS on the same box. Just make sure you change the gearbox oil every year or so (80W90 or 75W90 GL-4, not GL-5 since GL-5 lubes have sulphur which destroys our synchros) and be sure to fit a new pilot bearing when you install the clutch. In fact, buy my clutch and I will get you a new pilot bearing for free.

As for uprated boxes, changing the gearbox on an AE86 is one step to losing its character... any uprated box will be heavier and will usually have unsuitable ratio's.

If it aint 4AG, T50 and 6.7" rear end, it is no longer an AE86. That's the whole point of them...
