'gold sticker' (British Association of Motorcycle Sport, or something like that) helmets will meet a whole host of regulations - check the label inside the helmet, I'm sure it'll meet one off that list.

No no no, if it's approved to smash your head against the floor and trees and walls at 150mph - that doesn't mean it's approved to maybe knock your head against your roll cage padding. lol.

I think it's time I got a new helmet anyway, mines had it.

I need gloves and boots too. I hate driving in gloves, I'm going to blame every time I get knocked out on having to wear gloves

A group buy on FIA harnesses, up-to-spec helmets and race suits would be a good move if anyone has any ideas

Question regarding this, I'm aware a proban suit is required, but are there any special requirements for the boots and gloves? Sorry if this is already written somewhere and I've missed it.

Oh man! Why is a bike helmet not good enough. Can anyone explain the logic behind it?

After getting a bike helmet for the british open from my friend whos a salesman, and having to take it back as it didnt have the right safety marks, he did some research for me. Its to do with the number of protective composite shells in the construction of the helmet. I cant remember which way round it is for bikes/cars having one or two shells but each is designed to cope with different impacts.

Bike helmets are designed to cope with one large primary impact. (ie. the helmet hitting a car that has driven into the bike) Car helmets are designed to cope with a smaller initial impact and then possible subsequent multiple impacts. (i.e. a helmet hitting off a roll cage or B pillar on initial impact followed by smaller hits during subsequent impacts such as when a car rolls.)

Does that mean if you crash a bike you will only hit the road once?

Got told something similar by the woman in the shop where I got mine. She started going on about egg shells but I was too busy pretending to listen while staring at her boobs

dave: hehe very good point. Basically i think theres only so much protection you can really buy yourself, and bike riders do tend to expose themselves to impacts you'd otherwise avoid in the car.

Basically, after hitting the car windscreen dead on, you're on your own!

Then a bike helmet is more safe!? And should meet regs, depending on price that is.
