Better off buying it all FIA. Not much difference in price from .:EARS Motorsport & EARS Superbikes - Fast road, tuning, motorsport and replacement parts for cars and bikes

I dont think there's much point buying FIA stuff unless you're competing in an FIA sanctioned event, lol

The FIA boots are like twice the price of the non FIA. Got my eye on some nice Speedwells but they aren't FIA hence the question.

As far as I know they need to be fire retardent. The non FIA are not fire retardent hence no good for EDC. Not worth buying them twice if you do make it into EDC.

4-19. Drivers must wear approved fire protective apparel and safety device/s with a minimum equipment level of: Crash helmet (open face helmets are allowed although we recommend full face), racing overalls, racing boots, gloves and balaclava.

Optional equipment recommendation: Fire proof undergarments
so yup id say fireprrof gloves and boots

Same point you made with home made trailors....Because its safe.Things are FIA approved for good reason.I dont see why people have to keep saving money on safty stuff. But they are happy to spunk money on 18 inch wheels its madness. If you cant be arsed to do it properly dont bother.

would agree with you there buddy i wouldnt want to trade my nice skin for the sake of a few extra pounds because the kit wasnt up to the best standards, safety should be first at least you know when it does go bad you might get home at the end of the day.

Naturally you buy the best kit you can afford, but if you're on a budget like most of us are you wouldnt spend, for example, £300 on a Sparco nomex racesuit, when you can buy proban suits from HTH for £50 which are up to the required standard

Anybody wear a HANS device?

Anyone paying £500 for a full electrically operated fire extinguisher system?

See what I mean?

I wasnt for one second suggesting people should scrimp on safety items, but saying 'you might as well buy FIA stuff' is a bit much

I take it BDC is going international due to the requirment for FIA approved equipment.

Just to come back to this. I spent quite a while at Autosport yesterday weighing up what to buy. I've decided to go for a Sparco Sprint 2 Layer suit, Sparco shoes and gloves too. Along with the helmet I got yesterday it comes to about £415. Now considering thats ALL FIA approved thats not too bad a price really. All from Peter Lloyd BTW.

I chose to go with FIA because theres always the possibility of BDC/EDC changing the regs in the next few years to include mandatory FIA equipment. Also if by some miracle I make it up to EDC level [plus with EDC travelling to Europe this year] then I won't have to go and buy another suit.

The second reason I went for FIA approved stuff is that I realised all this stuff is, in one way or another, there to save your life/skin. Its really not worth skimping on. Buy cheaper wheels, don't fit that expensive bodykit, sell your ass if needs be but I wouldn't comprimise on safety.

Yup, they are the cheapest place I could find for anything race/rally.

The Sparco Flash gloves aren't even out yet though, just incase you try and order them as Ive just had to change my order.

Before we all go mad with credit cards - the BDC rules are strict enough to ensure we are safe, so treat them as a minimum requirement.

I'd love to buy cheaper wheels and spend on safety instead, but as my wheels are 6 quid each it would buy me sod all. Not all of us are aiming for international EDC glory, some of us just do this because it's a laugh.

Are we allowed to have tow straps fitted to the front of the car rather than a tow hook?
It would still be clearly marked with the word tow and an arrow

The Driftworks seat subframes have a seatbelt mounting point - are we ok to use this to attach one of the lap straps?

Do we need to have a passenger seat? Are we allowed to run without one? Thanks.

As far as I understand it you dont have to have one - but if you do it has to be FIA approved (but not necessarily in date), in good condition, and FIA approved min 4 point harness.
