Exclamation BDC judges

Ladies and gents

Your two resident judges for the 2008 season will be;

Pete Barber and Paul Smith.

Pete Barber

Pete started drifting in late 2005 - this continued in early 2006 practice days in a Toyota AE86, he then took to the sport so much i decided to compete in the clubman section of the Eurodrift championship.
This was to be great eye opener for Pete and turned out to be his year, he finished the year in 1st place overall and also achieved his provisional D1 license in a green Nissan Cefiro.

2007 saw the birth of a his car and another great year, the car he chose was a Mazda Rx7 FC which turned out to be a fairly hard car to drift compared to the huge Cefiro.

Pete had now moved up to the Pro-Am class of the Eurodrift series and also started to compete in EDC.

In the Eurodrift series he drove exceptionally well once again and secured 3rd place overall in the championship.

In the EDC Pete managed to qualify in the top 16 at every event and came 14th overall which he was fairly pleased with considering the competition and level of the drivers he had to compete against.

This year with the new rules in place Pete has chose to do a full season in the EDC with a Unique 3 Rotor powered Mazda RX7. He joins Paul Smith on the judging panel for the BDC.

Paul Smith

Paul caught the Drifting bug back in 2004, when he had an S13 200sx and started out like most drifters, with a few practice days, and then decided to enter a few of the Option Motorsport competition events.

In 2005 he competed in all of the AutoGlym Clubman Championship rounds, this time in his newly built R32 GTS-T Skyline. It was a pretty successful year with some good results, two 3rd Place finishes and a 1st Place at Round 3, another 1st Place at the Final Round resulting in a 2nd Place Championshipship standings.

2006, a new car - S13 180sx, a new championship – Eurodrift Pro/Am, and a new challenge – Tsuiso Battle (Twin Drift). Again Paul managed to get some decent results; Finishing in the Top 8 at every round with some top 4 finishes on the way. Also be awarded with the Best Entertainer Award and the final round.

2007, Paul started the year doing the Pro/Am EuroDrift Championship again where he had a 4th, 3rd, and two 2nds. These were great competitive events and gave Paul some good practice and experience for the twin drifting.

Paul then attending the EDC Licensing Event at North Weald FINAL Round where he gained a Full EDC Licence after just 3 Runs. He then went on to qualify for the following days main event. Paul qualified 5th overall, he won through to the top 8 and netted a in 6th place overall result.

2008 is going to be a very exciting year for Paul, he has secured some good sponsors onboard ; Abbey Motorsport, HKS, Japspeed, Exedy Clutches, Corbeau Seats, EP Racing and Rota Wheels. A new competition car which is now about 90% built, that he will be driving in the JapaneseUsedcars.com European Drift Championship and the JDM Allstars Triple Crown.

Our guest judges

The BDC will be having three judges per round, we are going to having a guest judge at each round of the championship.

Our first guest judge for the start of the Falken British Drift Championship will be the world renowed drifter Julian Smith!

Julian at work

Julian Smith's motorsport roots began in Ireland competing in Autograss events where going sideways is a necessity, this lead to driving in various forms of rallying, on both tarmac and loose surfaces. Moving to England in his mid twenties Julian gained a deep mechanical and technical knowledge of race cars by building a successful workshop in Watford. During 2000 Julian became involved with a small group of enthusiasts keen to import and learn the art of drifting. Quickly we developed the scene to the most exiting and promising motorsport seen within Europe for many years, this has resulted in attracting big budgets and created the high profile of the now globally known D1GP. 2007 saw a massive increase in the interest of drifting in Europe, and this culminated with the Japanese originators hosting a World Championship round at Silverstone, UK which gave Julian global recognition as a professional driver.

Good luck to all three judges at Teesside this weekend.

Many thanks

The BDC team
