Hopefully soon to be getting a getting a old capri to be my first car and maybe drift car. Looking at a 1.6 pinto with a 2.0 dropped in, will this skid alright? Also what mods have people done to capri/escort/sierra to make them self centre and more lock. I was looking at tension struts. From what I understand is that these move the arb forwalds and make it easier to adjust castor so therefor it will self centre better is that correct
My old 2.0 capri went well with a rebuilt 32/36 weber, 4-2-1 mani and system, electronic points ect. Main thing to concentrate be would be the suspension side of things imo. A welded diff and some kind of axle location like a-frame/anti tramp bars, lowering blocks on the back with decent shocks had some adjustable spax ones on mine which were sweet. Converting the front shocks to adjustable coilovers is easy enough if you can weld, kits are available to buy to do it and lets you change out the springs for something stiffer. Mine had shit steering lock but i never looked into getting more out of it as it wasn't a drift car, not sure if you can add rack spacers. Theres a build thread on here or retrorides that a guy from one of the ford magazines started, as he was building a capri for drifting so worth having a look through that if you find it.
A lot of people use MK2 escort steering racks. Quick rack, Spacers on the rack, Modified knuckles... I'm soon to be starting my pop 100e build with a 1.6 B6ZE from a mk1 mx5 and then putting a snail on it! That's going to be my first car as well!
I've got 2 Capris ATM; both i bought when i was 19, i'm 33 now. The drifter is a '78 3 litre S running a Burton fast road cam and electronic ignition. Set so far advanced she's just about locking up on the dizzy. Grunty. Single leaves, 2" blocks, 280 LSD 3.09 rear axle, billsteins with coilover conversion on the front. This car has spent it's life sideways. They say you need an axle location kit. I never did. Just set her low enough so she's running on the bumpstops and solid as a rock. Totally predictable i used to be able to txt while holding her sideways, steer from the rear. The top of my axle is polished from the bumpstops. Takes the 'sway' out of them. My strip car is based on a '79 3.0s but is fitted with a genuine RS X-pack. She's running a 4 bolt steel mains 5.7 litre Small Block Chevy out of a 1970 Corvette. The rear is 5 linked, turreted and running 11" custom shortened Leda coilovers. 285 yoko's on the rear and 225's on the front. She goes sideways but bites. The 5 link is the ultimate rear setup really as you can set it up how you want but to be fair you can't really get much of an improvement (for drifting at least) than a full 2.8i special setup. Just dump her as low as she'll go. I even chopped the bumpstops inside the billsteins and am running 200lbs 2.25 springs. I've had 16 Capris in total and my '78 3 litre has definately provided me with the most sideways chuckles.
