What are the 4 holes at the base of the HSD tubes?

    Does anyone know what the 4 holes at the base of the HSD suspension tubes are for?

    3 are shallow and 1 goes the entire length of the tube and each of mine have a brown gunk on when I put a wire up it?!

    They are shown below in the base of the galvanized bit......

    It's the screw cap on an inverted MonoPro damper body. The long hole is an air vent.
