    Bmw e21 v8 m60 - now with video!!

hi all after talking to my mate kam ive decided to do a build up thread on my e21. cars is running and road legal just isnt "finished" which i suppose they never are lol its at the working out gremlins stage and looks like this >>

if parts of this dont make sense its cos ive copied and pasted it from my retrorides build up. i did a separate one for this forum but my computer crashed just when i dint want it to and i lost it all, pissed off to say the least. lol so here we go

the rescue mission with huxmk1 way back in 2007

my mate benj doing some final checks

services and huxmk1 on the blower

and back at base camp with benj giving it the "i'm shy" pose

the original plan has to fit a 1.8 twin cam e30 318is M42 engine, so me and my dad made a spit frame to get the car on to start some car cancer treatment,

windscreen seals (can get very nasty on an e21)

    all sorted

all was going well then this arrived and yes that is an old shopping trolley lol

trial fits into the engine bay we're interesting to say the least, the engine fitted in but i'd stripped all the ancillaries off it and it was still mega tight, plus it had no room for exhausts

oh yeah and the gearbox didnt fit in the tunnel soooo

    TA DAH!!!

I made a new tunnel at work which turned out like this

........ on reflection what the fuck was I thinking?so out came the grinder again I will post pictures of the new tunnel in the next update as hux has been tricking it out a bit, all these pictures so far have just scraped into the start of 2008 so ill now get cracking on the second update. hope you've enjoyed thanks for looking.

    right then part 2
by this point ive fitted a Fritz's Bitz e12 diff conversion ( thats a old M5 diff conversion for you non bmw boys) to take the S@!t ill be giving this thing . doing a project like this as many of you know means you have to think about everything, whats going where, how its going to fit, what I you've gotta take something out etc, so refering to the engine space problem I had I decided to entrust the car to this delightful chap.... Huxley

as some of you may or may not know hux has his own business building roll cages and tube chassis'd race cars, kinda handy then that he's my best mate so off went the car to hux's domain.

yeah so getting back to the engine space problem, little nip here little slice there...

then insert a bit of drag stylee space framing and voila!!!

and to protect my lovely self

and loads more room, mission accomplished!!! so then it was back to my place, for some more fettling

lick of primer on the cage and then cut the whole of the floor out (well almost)

I got in touch with a local sheet fabricators which we use at work to make machine guards, told them what I wanted and I got this, two sections of transmission tunnel and some 4"exhaust tunnelling. the transmission tunnel is 22 inches wide at the mouth lol its a tad excessive but I wanted the room.

hi all, ive uploaded some pics from my phone that were taken over at Huxley Motorsport, this is the stage the car is at atm.

this is a mk2 escort bias pedal box with a little cutty cutty choppy choppy, I had hux install it for meand alter pedal positions to somewhere thats going to be comfortable and high enough to suit a false floor/ foot plate over the exhaust tunnel.

a major concern I had with the car was the front strut towers and being able to munt the suspension to a proper spherical bearing top mount. as the front of the car is space framed its not just a case of bolting one up, so armed with some drawings of the original dimensions of an e21 I had a chat with hux about it all and this is what we (mainly hux lol) came up with,

add a little bit of compbrake spherical top mount sexyness and we got this,

when I installed the engine and gearbox i'd set the gearbox mount too low which mean the propshaft wasnt aligned so I asked hux to chop my mount out and make another one, this is what he came up with, one of my specific requests to hux was to make it so I could mould polyurethane into it to "rubber" mount the gear box,

ive turned up some sleeves at work that are 20mm OD and 10.2 ID to mould into the polyurethane ( will post this up in a later update)
obviously with the gearbox coming up higher this meant that the linkages needed to come up higher so I asked hux to make a little modification to the tunnel i'd put in, this modification will also give me a base for another platform for a hydraulic handbrake assembly I'm also working on,

hux flat floored the boot for me too and sunk my fuel tank into the new floor,

my favourite part so far is this the exhaust system, only one box ( cherry bomb turbo) 3" in 3" out per bank, 3 inch bore all the way through using proper 3 inch 90 degree bends throughout the system to provide the curves. will post up videos as soon as ive rewired the car,

also need to post up the manifolds me and hux built last summer, all tig welded tubular manifolds, thanks for looking. misky

Loving that. Had a 323 E21 a few years back. Was nice, with recaros, rear head rests and some kind of massive fuel tank in the boot. It was all billy cotton round the inner rear arches though and the gearbox began to get bad.
Sold it in 2001 for £400
