After selling my 318is 'loon (journal here>>> • Login )I've been searching for it's replacement. I wanted something that I could learn to drift in and after hunting around for weeks and looking at several nails of cars I finally found the perfect base for my project. After a long trip up to harrogate and an lengthy argument with my insurance company I was sat in a hellrot red 325 coupe on my way down the M1 towards home Her paintwork has seen better days and all four arches are more than a tad rusty but the suspension feels tight and the engine pulls strong Project Drift begins. Plans are: Coilovers, Welded Diff or LSD Buckets & harness's Dished wheel Plenty of seat time
I chucked on a few things I had lying around in the garage from the last E36. The wheels that came on the car have been relegated to skid wheels
Here's a few pics of the de-rusting I've been doing over the past couple of days I haven't got a picture of the arches before I touched them but lets just say they were terrible  I cut away the rusted arch lips with an angle grinder and used a wire brush attachment to remove the loose paint/rust on the surface of the arch. I then used P40 fibreglass filler to bridge any damage and re-shape the arch. Next I used P38 fine surface filler to skim over the top I then Masked the area off and primed with Red oxide primer and the rear arches are now ready for paint.
Here's my latest purchase for the budget drifter Thanks to Baz at Redbitz performance for sorting me out with these I know neither seats or harness's match but this project is being built on a function over form basis and they'll certainly do the job
This is how it currently sits. The indicators kept falling out due to knackered clips so they have been taped in place. The arches are in red oxide primer waiting for paint and the original rear wheels have been refitted due to this... oops!
I was happy to see a UPS van pulling up outside my house this afternoon. That could only mean one thing... COILOVERS!!!
Why did you "mask" up the arches with a big square of tape You'd have been better off not "masking" it up
because I was going to mask it all off properly but decided not to half way through and to just paint the whole car in the near future instead
Fitted my Z3 rear shock Reinforcement plates today to strengthen up the rear end a little bit now the stiffer suspension is fitted Before: After:
whats your opinion about coilovers? are they stiff enough to drift? im looking for cheap coils an your advice would be great
I "borrowed" My dads BBS RS GT's today for a test fit 18"x8 and 18"x9 Fitment looked great even with the big tyres Apologies for the terrible pic quality
great project hope it works out well for you im doing the same im buildin a cheap drift car too only i have a 1.8 so i need to put a bigger engine but good luck with it
Get that bad boy fitted asap It doesn't have to take a couple of weeks It can be done in under 2 hours, working alone on the driveway with limited tools.
