Hi Been lurking on here a while now but not done a build thread before. I currently drive a satin green S14 (It is better then the speedboat red orange peel mess it was before). Some of you may know the car or have seen it at Lydden or Snetterton. Anyway always liked FC RX7s and decided I needed one in my life. So I bought a fairly ropey one from Scottland without viewing it at all I figured £700 is worth a punt. The day it turned up. {} I now owned 2 rusty old money pits! {} I drove it around as my daily for a while but soon got tired of the retarded MPG and I didn't really get on with the rotary feel, loved the noise and when it got going it was ok but not my cup of tea. So then this happened. {} Pulled me wankel out and sent it off to a guy in Spain who planned to rebuild it. got £650 which made the FC shell a bargain So the plan then was FC + SR20DET (had always been my intention really) Started stripping the car down, its going to be a slow process from here on I think as I've got limited time with work, uni and trying to get the Pig (s14) out for a play as often as is affordable. The car had some bad rust repairs done and I was aware of that when I bought it. I wasn't aware the interior had also been stripped at some point to by what I can only assume was an angry silver back gorilla, literally every point where the dash bolts in was cracked or missing altogether lol. I soon found a few areas in need of some serious attention. Plan now is to spend some more time gutting the shell before bringing it round from my garage to the driveway and getting it up on stands to strip suspension etc.. will then start tackling the rust issues and getting the shell solid before starting the engine swap. I have a dummy block and gearbox bell housing to start mocking up engine mounts. I have read a few builds for SR FCs and the main issue seems to be the sump/steering rack clearance. but I will deal with that when the time comes. {} {} {} {}
Sweet man I got an fc to but with a 1j got stuck in myself with the rust repair bit scary at first but rewarding. Is yours a s4 or s5?
S5 have circle rear lights different front bar there's heaps man the from lower arms the tie rod is built in and on s4 they bolt onto the arm s4 clutch type LSD even length axles s5 is vlsd etc etc Should be badass with an sr
Ok cool well I know its got circle rear lights as for the rest ppfftt! I will take the Hats word on it being an S5. I clearly have a lot to learn about them. Yeah im hoping so! Should retain a nice weight balance with the SR
Yeah think it is only really the sump that makes things difficult. Ive seen a custom rear sump setup done before but that still leaves very little clearance to the rack and seems to leave the engine sitting quite high. Have been thinking about moving rack forward and down a bit for more clearance with a similar rearsump setup. I wonte know for sure what will work until I get to that stage.
Looks nice a little tatty but nice in a retro kinda way How long do you plan on taking to get the conversion done?
Yeah I know the car but I just went too view it in Dundee as lots of people were interested but wanted too know what it was like so I just posted on the original sale thread as asked too buy the owner shame it wasn't still up here or it would have been suffering the same fate as my na and getting the crashy jumanji treatment
Yeah remember reading ur feed back on it defo had a few issues. Stopped the smoking after boost by venting the filler neck breather to atmos but was still frothing up the coolant lol
Not really sure mate it will take as long as it takes money and time are the limiting factors at the minute. So anyway little update, I bought this lot off a fella on here from eBay "Chidley" IIRC couldn't resist even though I wonte be needing them for some time yet. I only really bought it for manifold and the oil line and maybe the waste gate just to get me going. Im told the Turbo Is a Holset 3LD and is as old as the hills! the plan is to create a similar setup to that on my S14 which is running a TD06 20g with a Tial 44mm gate. I also got hooked up with some 15w50 Race Oil from ROCKOIL which im very grateful for My mates dad also picked me up a gas reg to convert my MIG to big bottle which with the amount of welding this thing needs is the way to go. That's about how things are at the minute will hopefully get a bit of time at the weekend to get a few jobs done on this and the s14
Good luck will be keeping an eye on this as was thinking of doing an srfc as my next project .... There's few builds in the states that were a good read, they made there own rear sump which looked good. Keep the updates coming
