It was a track day, but I was drifting the top and bottom corners fairly easily and without much fear of death

I couldnt do the middle bus-stop type chicane though, although I did only have the morning until the turbo blew up

Relatively painless experience taking the engine out:

Aircon and ABS will be removed before the new one goes in. I'll also send the flywheel off to be lightened as it weighs a tonne! And I'll be drilling and tapping another hole in the side of the sump for my oil temp gauge.

The sump contained some rather large and worrying bits of metal that looked like they might once have belonged to a piston

Running sweeter than the old one did by the sounds of it, and now Ive got ANOTHER set of spare coils lol, aswell as stuff like sump, head, cams etc

Aircon has been binned, ABS thingy will be too - I'll do all the new brake lines over xmas I think.

Right, time for an update

I've been using the car as my main road car over christmas and new year, and unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago, it got stolen and crashed

The damage turned out to be not too bad - front nearside damage to bumper, wing, headlight, and the top of the bit the radiator mounts to.

So I stripped it all down and tied a towrope round the bent bit - and used my other car to pull on it and pull it back straight. Doing this made me feel like a proper banger-racing pikey

New headlights have been purchased from Ed (turbo-tastic) - thanks mate, and will be fitted asap. They're red, but the car's going to be painted soon anyway so that's not a problem

So the crash damage has been fixed, but the car still wouldnt start. Charging the battery didnt help, so a new starter is needed. I bump-started it yesterday, and it roared back into life without any fuss. Damn it was good to hear the engine purring away, revving freely with no misfire, after so long

Obviously all the ignition barrel / wiring has been ripped out, so I have ordered one of these switch panels:

and some carbon-fibre, to make a switch panel in place of where the stereo used to be

The car also developed a bad misfire, effectively limiting the top speed to 65mph and not allowing anything other than about 1/10th throttle This has now been fixed either by the AFM I got from Ed while I was picking up the headlights, or by the ignition amplifier that Alex sent me. Thank you to both of you

The insurance runs out on Sunday, and with the damage to the ignition wiring, steering lock, etc, and the imminent arrival of my roll cage from Japan, I think it's time to turn this into a trailer queen Then I can do some more extreme things and not worry about having to put it through an MoT every year Tax and insurance budget will be spent on a trailer, and I'll eventually replace the E30 325 with something bigger (probably still BMW, maybe with a V8 in the front )

Roll cage is on its way from Japan, ETA early March

I now have an extra pair of Rotas, giving me more driving time and less waiting for tyre swappage

Paint (and therefore also graphics) will have to wait for warmer weather, so no progress on that.

I'll be getting a new steering wheel with a QR spacer for extra security aswell

Walbro fuel pump went in today - pretty easy job compared to when I fitted one to the GTR

Got rid of some more sound-deadening on the rear (sticky stuff attached to the sides), and unbolted the bracket inside the left side rear wing that holds the jack. Also lost the HUGE bracket under the plenum, which makes it easier to get the starter motor out

I need to take the new headlight off again and pull the front out some more, because the bonnet overlaps it by about an inch lol

I should really go back out and start attacking it with the holesaw, but I think I'll watch the rugby instead

Time to pull my finger out and get cracking to turn this from the knackered old shed it is at the moment into the D1 machine I want it to be

Roll cage has landed, should be with me for next week

Full alignment kit from Apex has been paid for, along with a steering wheel / boss / QR spacer, so should have that next week aswell

Replacement starter motor arrived last week, so I can get on with fitting that and wiring it up to the new switch panel.

Matt black paint still in garage, the weather is warm enough now but it wont stop raining

New starter motor on, ignition switches and starter button wired up, and she fires up first time on the button

New Sparco steering wheel and QR spacer also fitted today.

And I also relocated the internal boot/petrol cap release to the B-pillar because the seat frame had been getting in its way

All pictures to come tomorrow.

If the weather tomorrow is as good as it was today I'll spray it. If not, I'll take the rear subframe off and start doing the adjustable arms

No pictures, again, cos I was so into working and shit it got dark before I remembered to take any

I did take this one though:

The last of the sound-deadening (under the drivers seat) is nearly off now, and I made up a panel in ali to cover the hole in the dash where the centre console and gubbins went - which is to be covered in some carbon-fibre sheet that a mate has spare. Watch this space for that, I think it looks sweet
