1JZ MAZDA b2200 drift build Welcome! To start off, my name is Alex and this is my drift truck build. Ive always been a fan of these trucks as I currently daily drive one but wanted something a little different to bring to the track. This is my daily {} IMG_5365 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr {} IMG_5366 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr My main inspiration definitely comes from Nigel Petrie (from engineered to slide) if you haven’t seen his amazing work please take a second to check out his Toyota Hilux. http://www.speedhunters.com/2013/10/the-final-entry-engineered-to-slide-hilux/ Also a big influence is Viktor Martensson with his 1JZ powred VW Caddy. http://www.speedhunters.com/2013/04/united-nations-of-car-culture-1jz-vw-caddy/ With the combined attention to detail and the hands on approach of both of these builders, i cant help but be inspired. Moving on! The plan is essentially: Motor: 1jzgte Frame: custom built fully caged Suspension/drivetrain: s13 Day one... Picked up the donor cab from the local scrap yard for $56 CND with the help of my Pops and some good friends. {} Untitled by Alex Lachance, on Flickr {} Untitled by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Then was off to pick up my steel order. {} IMG_5342 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr I quickly cut out the floor and started mocking everything up {} IMG_5343 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr {} IMG_5345 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr {} IMG_5353 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr This will be the ride height when finished {} IMG_5357 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr
So next was the frame. Started by laying out and tacking together what I wanted the main support would be. I essentially want nothing to hang below the 4”x4” pieces of wood I have it sitting on. Having everything tucked above will be key in case I accidently go off track (and I will). IMG_5400 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Measured up and tacked in place my transmission support. IMG_5369 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5459 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Moved on to the front end. IMG_5450 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5451 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5456 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5454 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Things all tacked in place. Taking shape fast! IMG_5468 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5465 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5466 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Some of my frame welds IMG_5473 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Added some braces to help reduce flex. IMG_5494 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5490 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Finished up the majority of my welds IMG_5491 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Added another brace up front. It’s essentially lower then the lowest point of the oil pan by 1-1/4” to hopefully protect it as much as possible. IMG_5497 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Next up was the actual trans mount. IMG_5498 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5500 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr All tacked in place. IMG_5504 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr And a couple pictures of how it sits now. Things are moving along pretty well. IMG_5503 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5509 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5508 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr

So small update for tonight. Ended up bending up the main hoop. I have to say.... WHAT A PAIN! but its done and im happy with how it fits. IMG_5529 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5530 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Fits nice and close IMG_5532 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr All and all a good night.
Prefect. Had the privilege of driving one of these with a sr20det s13 with some mods. Very very impressive vehicle but looses traction very easily and not enough steering angle. Seems to working out that the proper way.
Yeah hopefully I'll be able to balance out the chassis and get a decent amount of angle with the s13 front end components. At least compared to the stock b2200 stuff.
Small update, Bent up the "A" pillar bars so i could begin working on the front shock towers. IMG_5544 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5542 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5555 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr then started fitting up part of the tube front. Still trying to figure out where exactly to run the bar. I want to make sure it won't interfere with anything now, or in the future. IMG_5547 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5557 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Ran the tube through the firewall and notched the piece as good as i could get it to the "A" pillar bar. IMG_5549 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5553 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5552 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Still lots to do but its coming along. IMG_5548 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr I think Im planning on making my strut tower "plates" removable. So if down the road I was to play around with different caster or plan on widening the front end I can remake the top plate and push my coilovers outwards (kinda like the wisefab kits.
Last night I got some things done. Removed my windshield. Wasn't as difficult as I thought once you have the right tools. IMG_5620 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Then Finished off the night by bending up part of the front tube section. Brought My top plates to a local machine shop because lets face it... Hole-sawing 4" hole in two pieces of 1/4'' thick plate of steel with a hand drill isn't something I feel like doing. Id like to keep my wrists. IMG_5621 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5624 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Things are just tacked in place for now seeing as I still need to remove the cab later on for final and complete welding of the roll cage. IMG_5626 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5629 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr Section that comes through the firewall. IMG_5630 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5632 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr That's it for now.
Went and picked up my strut tower plates at the local machine shop and after talking to the owner for a bit, found out a little about the history of this shop. IMG_5633 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr This building has been standing in this location for over 150 years. From a Church, to Blacksmiths, and now a machine shop... its a crazy feeling you get walking into a building that's seen so many things come and go. IMG_5634 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr
Once back at the garage. I got started on mocking up where my top plates will sit. Tacked them in place for now just so nothing moves around. IMG_5640 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5641 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5642 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr All my angles and measurements are dead on where I need them. I still need to run more of the tube front and support the other side of my top plates. IMG_5643 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5644 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr
I went ahead and removed all the old under dash brackets that held the heater core, steering column and other things. They where about to interfere with the dash bar I was about to fit. Thanks to this little gem. This spot weld cutter made the job much easier. IMG_5637 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr All clean and ready for the next step. IMG_5639 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr
Time for the dash bar. IMG_5645 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5649 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr IMG_5650 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr All fitted up. IMG_5655 by Alex Lachance, on Flickr
definitely one of the best builds on here! how are you fitting the steering column? A plate/something on the dash bar?
