I've been taking pictures along the way to I thought I'd do one of these so I can keep track where I've come from. So, I picked up this from a friend for £650 with the usual bottom end knock, and a previous owner had tried to remove the engine. This first job was searching for rust (it wasn't hard) Behind front right wheel: Passenger footwell. (Fixed with a baking tray) Rear jacking sill/sub frame mount: Right side of rear bumper: Apart from that, it looks pretty good insert here: My first main job was to remove the engine which apart from two bolts on the gearbox it was pretty easy. Considering the front is getting tubed I'm measuring everything for reference. I had to take some time off to swap the engine in my dads Westfield but I'm back on it now. I've started to clean the engine bay up, I've now got a new hatred for wiring. Dashboard now removed: Finally got the engine bay clear so I can start grinding and cutting: The strut tower had some rust so I started there: And that's where I'm at now, hopefully have some updates soon. Any questions or tell me what I'm doing wrong is welcome. Thanks.
Update: Loom fully removed. (Ball ache) Also the brake and clutch are gone also. Started to clean the engine bay ready for cutting and welding. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Update: Started the tubbing process, I've drilled/ground the spot welds out on the radiator support and the wheel arch. I'll be starting on the right side this week, but so far all the measurements I took before hand are matching up. (For now)
Quick update: Both sides cut and sorted now. Next job is to clean up the engine bay, start measuring stuff and keep a eye on the scrap pile at work. While the front is getting sorted, I'm also going to start on the back. First job is fuel tank off, grind, wire wheel, grind, wire wheel, then measure up and fix the rust and crushed sills. Hopefully another update by this weekend.
Had a some time tonight so I've started with the interior wiring. All wiring is out now, so it time to start the dreaded job of sound deadening removal. Before starting under the car to sort out the inevitable rust problems.
Quick update: Started the dreaded job of ripping out the sound deadening, it was shit. I gave up loads of times but eventually got it done. Got a little high which helped Made up a car dolly, so I can remove both subframe and get them sorted at the same time. Some sketchy jacking, but it worked. Hopefully the next update will be without any sub frames and fuel tank.
Does anyone know how to change the title of a thread, because this is now a sr20 in rs13 build. I've had a look on tapatalk and the pc version, I can't find it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Subframe update: Took the front subframe off, still need to sort it out. Rear sub frame: Removed, blasted, and welded any little gaps. Ordered a new rear lower arm because the stock one was rusted away. Also just bought a sr20 so the ca is gone. If anyone wants it and is local to Horwich. It's yours.
Looking good so far. Hate taking sound deadening off. Did it once on one of my volvos, vowed never to do it again
It's a horrible job, the fumes from the petrol and brake cleaner and beer made it a lot easier. But it'll all be worth it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Big (ish) Update: Got the subframe and arms back from the powder coaters, really happy with them. Put it together with some driftworks bushes. Anyone doing this for the first time, make sure you cut or press out the metal rings on the both the hubs and sub frame or you'll end up having to buy a Dremel to cut them out. Decided to paint the hubs a similar colour to the bushes because, why not. I think it looks great! I then got the car ready for blasting next Tuesday. So I can see the extent of the rust and where to start. Haha Apart from that it's all looking good. Once I've got it blasted and zinc primer painted, I can start welding and inch spot welding the chassis rails and other fun stuff. Another Update hopefully mid next week.
Sand blast update: Dustlessblasting-uk came today and did a amazing job. The whole thing took from 9am to 3pm and cost £140 including zinc primering the whole thing, which considering the work involved I didn't think was that bad at all. This is how it finished. Should be starting to mock up for the welding this week/weekend.
Welding update: Managed to get a couple hours on it today, the front end rust is pretty much sorted now. Starting the rear sub frame mounts and arches on Wednesday. Starting to look less like Swiss cheese. More updates to follow!
Got the last part of the welding done on the under side of the car today. I know need to spend some quality time with the grinder then rattle car the rest so I can then under seal the hell out of it, I also need to finish hammering out the spare wheel well so the floor is relatively flat for the fuel tank. I spot welded 2 inch gaps on the chassis rails, not sure if I will feel the difference but I suppose it won't harm it. After under sealing it the plan is to clean the inside of the car so I can paint it black, ready for the interior in a few months. Then on to the sub frames and brakes.
Fantastic work man, Good to see someone bringing back a uk car to life again. Keep it going keen to see it finished
