Havent done a build thread for a while & with the amount of interest the last MX i had thought it might be nice to document the hell that is putting a JZ in an mx & improving the driveline to the point it will cope with the power For anybody unfamiliar with the last car here are a few pics
Due to constant changing safety regs the old car wouldnt have been much fun to make compliant with new regulations after some messing with a BMW i found my heart wasnt in it & had to go for another little MX Decided to cheat a little with the shell prep dropped it off for blasting safe to say its going to keep me occupied for a little while removing all the holes
Rollcage was the main area that needed improvement being over 6' tall in a tiny car isnt ideal, ive mounted the main hoop ferther out & dropped it into the bottom of the sill so the doorbars can go through the door shut panel & attach to the hoop, also the main hoop is much higher meaning there is clearance for an X section as required. The above also means i need to use a different roof, the BMW i had being an ideal doner
damn!! this is epic !!!! great job sorting the body, looked like it was rotting under there !!! super excited to see this come along after seeing your last MX, im looking to buy one of these so going to be a great inspiration lol good luck in the next stages dude!!!!
Little more progress over the last couple of days. rust cut out & chopped enough to get to the lower section of the main hoop that finishes in the bottom of the sill to weld the doorbar all the way round Next up other part of the doorbar X which isnt such a big job, plate the bottom of the main hoop with 3mm & build the sill back up around it. Its alot of work but the only way to give myself enough space for flapping at the wheel, last one i was constantely smashing my elbow on the upper doorbar. X section in this should help alot. also enough clearance for FRP seats with side head restraints which was another issue with the old one. simply not enough space.
Also my inlet & ex Mani's arrived from Speedtek, super impressed with them. great quality & cheap too. Inlet is really thick cast from 2 pieces & welded together they left the flange undrilled as i want to run a corvetter FBW throttle body EX is T4 devided with twin 38mm wastegate take offs
A fair bit of progress has been made since my last update & a few additional stupid ideas have somehow happened. Front & rear impact protection bumper bars & general framework is complete Front subframe modified to occomodate the 2jz sump Rear subframe is a 200sx S13 adapted to fit the standard MX5 Mounts & the thing that has caused much head scratching & sleepless nights lol:
