| buttercakes!! ![]() | Trampdrift BMW M3 after stumbling upon driftworks rather accidentally, i ended up taking a fancy to Adam's 325i he had for sale at the time. I ended up snapping it up, and went for a couple novice blasts round the oval at crail. HOOKED! ![]() it wasn't the tidyest but it went very well, and i had 4k trouble free miles in it! Then after a particularly agressive day at crail, i managed to rip the diff mounts out the floor, complete with all the surrounding metal. Absolutely gutted. Combined with a nasty crash i had meaning i couldnt do any motorsport for a year i ended up flogging it for £750 to someone in ireland and never heard from it again. When i was allowed, i ended up getting a 320i which i initially joint owned and then bought over the half share. The car had little expense spent on it, and i totally detested it, with its constant smell of damp, naff colour, crap seats and wheezy 2.0 lump that felt slower than all the 2.0 sierras that came to crail. I ended up selling that on ebay to a chap in london who paid three times what he paid me for the car, having it transported by a local garage! Crazyness. ![]() I then bought TaxiDori's old S14Qs and had mixed results with it. Although it drifted nicely out the box, it forever went wrong and i got dogs abuse for its general unreliability. Also, on my first outing in it, i managed to do this: ![]() No major damage apart from the terminal destruction of the tyte aero front bumper thingy. Oh well. A matt black standard one went on to replace it. Stuff like the impossibleness of finding a clutch (which went phut at the start of a drift day at ingleston), a 3 week wait for a dizzy cap, plug leads from an almera that didn't quite reach, and leaky injectors that filled the sump with petrol all pissed me right off, so i sold it to yet another irishman (who is now selling it on autotrader for a good £500 more) So back to the E36 thoughts I! Infact in daily driver too. I sold my ibiza cupra (yellow ) along with the silvia and went bmw hunting. First, an e36 touring was a desire i'd had for a while so i nipped down to chesterfield (via the m6, a lap of the manchester ring road, and through the middle of stockport) and bought Simonman's e36 touring. I'm glad i did, as by the pics it would have been flooded by now. I originally intended to drift it, but on the journey back up it was far too comfy so it was doing to be the daily car!Back in scotland, the hunt for a drifter was getting well underway. I'd fancied another 325i, as i thought i'd never be able to afford an m3. I also needed it to be a saloon, as i'd had 4drs before and wouldnt want a coupe. They just look more utilitarian, are generally cheaper, and you can fit rims in the back. Vicious rumours also circle that they're both lighter and a stiffer body than the coupe? On ebay, m3s seemed to start at about £3200, with one 188k miler down outside oxford not meeting its reserve, finishing at 2800. Then two_sheds, who'd been picking up some parts for his e30 had gone to AVB in linlithgow, who had a 4dr M3 they had stickered up, and was intended for use drifting and track days. I remembered it from a day at crail - mainly due to this ![]() and then... whoops! ![]() Damage to the front bumper, and a bend in the arch plus a scuffed alloy, it seemed. Anycase, an email or two later and i went off to see the car. Seemed okay - hit up the side which had written the car off, but otherwise straight. M3 Kontour alloys, bucket seat, harness, chipped, new clutch, a tight LSD, no nasty vanos rattle - it was the 3.0 not the 3.2 evo with twin vanos (yuck), some spare tyres, an oil leak (great!), £2500 and i was a happy chappy! Got it home and did some romantic photoing with Simons old tourer: ![]() Did a track night at knockhill with the car, along with Jeek and Chizfab, car was very good although a tad understeery due to fat 245 tyres on the back. Some decent drifts round the hairpin too - there was a video of this posted up on DW about a month ago. First drifty day at crail started very well, the car was eager to get the back end out and the 300 powaahhs would light up the 205/55 16s i'd bought for the back (£21 for 4 off ebay. hot bazizzle). But, dreaded overheating! Tried to bleed the system repeatedly but the self bleeding system on the m3 seemed to have a mind of its own. So i did a few more short runs letting the temp get up to 3/4 and coming back in. Took the car to Checkpoint in arbroath (gurus!! they sponsor an s13 in eurodrift amateur) where they made up a new thermostat that runs open, but allows the proper flow of water around the block - leaving the thermostat out doesnt channel the water properly and cooks half the engine, ask MJG about this!). Second drift day much better!! The video for the trampdrift members is currently in the media section but i managed to not only keep the thing at halfway temp but also get some good practice in, still using 205s on the back though. ![]() ![]() The car is booked for a s00per-d00per Chizfab rollcage next week, so some prep has been required. First a bit of destickering, not too much yet though as its not like i've masses of sponsors at the moment to worry over. ![]() ![]() These doors won't be surviving, so i bought a £150 318 to donate its doors. Took plenty bits off that, kept the doors and sold most of the interior on ebay (£100 ish), gave the steels to Chizfab (now on the back of his tourer for sale!), and got £70 for the shell. Seemed like good maths to me. Also managed to sell the steering wheel in the M3 for £225, and replaced it with a dishy sparco one i kept from my silvia. Theres not too much more m3 stuff to sell, apart from sill trims and the diff/bumpers which need to stay at the moment. For the 6point cage, the dash has gotta get binned for a while, so i'm in the middle of trying to remove it. ![]() Without a haynes, this is tricky. E36coupe.com says "consult your haynes", but mine is in the back of the 320 i sold - lesson learned is don't give away shit you don't really need to. So plenty work to do still here for the cage fitting, and Chizfab is also plumbing in a hydro too (not decided on horiz or vertical yet depending on space on the tunnel. The car also needs a new crank seal as its got a drippy drippy, but this can wait as its not a disaster at the moment! Plans for the moment
after all that's done we'll see what the budget allows for rebuilt diffs, exhausts and better induction. I've bought another set of MiM alloys (remember them from MJG's E28?) so i need to refurb them and continue collecting lovely lovely wheels and tyres. More progress soon! | I wish you'd never bought that first 325, then I wouldn't be utterly hooked on the drift and I'd have enough for a holiday or some pies or something, instead of a massive overdraught and a car that may or may not actually exist on the other side of the world. |

| buttercakes!! ![]() | more progress today... dash out - much simpler than the instruction manual for the US version of the E36 i downloaded. The manual said i needed to drill out bolts and support the steering column, as well as taking out the impact safety bar things. And the indicator/wiper stalks. Nope, none of that, it all just came out very easily. ![]() I also wanted to fit M3 Evo Essentric top mounts like i had in my last 325. they fitted in the 325 like this ![]() the mighty bonatron informed me that its probably the wrong way of rotation to fit these, despite them having ruuude camber and it handling fine on track (a bit odd on the road braking in a straight line tho. I open up my top mount covers on this non-evo m3, expecting to find concentric mounts like every other e36, but i find this: ![]() It *looks* like the evo mounts fitted as per how bon mentioned. But i'm aware that the sides are meant to be swapped over, and i have no idea now if these are m3 mounts, evo mounts, and if they are fitted on the correct or opposite sides, and if they're rotated correctly. all advice appreciated! |
