PS13 Silvia - Origin Lab x Skay Japan x Okishima

Well as some people know I collected my 2007/08 drift car yesterday, much thanks to Meester Smeeth for piloting the green machine to tow her back, and putting up with 5 hours of my fonejacker impersonations, goooooooood afternoon madaaam.

Anyway, I have big plans for the car, the first goal is to get it running 100% and iron out all the minor niggles I have found, the second is to get it up to EDC spec and the third is to tart it up gooood and proper.

PS - I'm updating the spec above as I go along to keep it all in one place

================================================== =======================

After collecting the car yesterday we swung by DWHQ in Birmingham to pick up some toys, despite Bon Bon's sales patter I resisted a set of the new DW Control System coilovers [although holy shit they are cool bits of kit and I might still get some!], and despite Melissa force-feeding me Wham bars [honest Phil] .

I walked away with these-

Awesome service as every guys PS - Gimme a job!

That little lot should keep me busy for now, I also have to figure out why none of the Apex-i EL2 gauges are working [they light up but don't read anything] as I'd really like to keep them as they look awesome.

Also on my immediate todo list is mapping of the PowerFC [the engine should be good for 350hp+] and sorting out the idle problem - the idle rises and drops when the lights are turned on - any ideas?

I might also get the front aero repaired and touch in the other small marks as a temporary fix until the new kit arrives.

I'll update this thread as things progress and I'll be using it as a todo list. Don't go expecting anything spectacular as the cars pretty much where I want it to be mechanically, plus Im not taff!

All comments/ideas suggestions welcome.

Update!

Had the day off today [you'll find most of my updates will be on Tuesday evenings as is the only day I get to work on the car].

Decided to start out by looking at the Apexi gauges and try and figure out why they weren't working. Found out they are all daisy chained together so HOPED that one gauge was faulty and this was breaking the chain. It wasn't. They are all bustereded. Looks like there has been a hell of a lot of heat near the wires for the water temp sender [its melted the protective cover] but the wires looked intact. That still doesn't explain why none of the gauges work. I tried plugging them in one by one alone along with the relevant signal wire from each sender but to no avail. Its a weird one because the control unit is powering the gauges, the peak and warn lights on each one can be selected via the control unit, but there is no signal for readings going to any of them.

My solution for now -

I need to either try some of my gauges in someone else's car or try a working gauge in my car so I can rule out either the senders/control unit or gauges themselves. I just find it REALLY hard to believe that ALL of the guages have packed in [theres 5 in total!]. If anyone has any suggestions or has these gauges fitted I'd like to hear from you!

After failing miserably at sorting that problem I decided to do what I do best, start taking useless crap out of the car.

And yes, I said I'd never do this again after the S14 but out came the hammer and chisel.

Most of it was really easy to remove except on the wheel arches and rear turrets. Complete ball-ache.

Thats all really from today, I'm waiting on my boost controller to arrive so I can get that plumbed in and then get the car over to Steve Sadler at FCTuning for him to work his magic and get it making powers.

Oh and I found out the turbo is the B60 model rather than the B70 I had in my S14, need to do some research and find out the specs.

Before I go - anyone know what this is/does? Its behind the rear panel/doorcard thing in the back on the n/s.

Till next time, sexy back.

No updates yet people, just got back off holiday so will be back onto things soon.

Bought a Greddy Profec B Spec II to take care of boost and a mechanical Apexi EL2 boost gauge to use until I get the electric gauges to work. Once the Profec is fitted it'll be mapped and Ill report back with the magic figures!

New seat!

Sparco Prodrive Pro WRC [Frp, Carbon was a bit rich!] - fits lovely, really comfortable and a bit posh.

Chandler says yes .

I'll take the decorations off it before it goes in the car

Seat and steering wheel fitted. I' gona have to lose a few inches as the seat is snug!! And anyone that knows me knows I'm not exactly fat!

Test fitted one of the 9J Work wheels, these will do until the wheels I want become available in a few weeks.

Gonna need a slight pull on the rear for them to fit.

Also did some minor tidying today too, getting ride of wiring not needed and connecting up all hoses from Profec B etc. Upon reflection, theres not THAT much needed to be done to make it worthy of being drifted.

Front bumper and broken Apexi gauges are now with Garage RippleDrift [tm] also. Paul and Roger are going to make the bumper sturdy again and see if he can bring the gauges back to life, much appreciated

Have a nice list together of all the bits the car NEEDS and all the bits I WANT to get done. Good news is the NEEDS list is fairly small and cheap. Its the WANT list that costs . In terms of the HICAS removal I have at my disposal -
  • JDM 180SX Rear Subframe
  • UK 200SX S13 Steering Rack
  • JDM 180SX PAS Pump

I need to get [I believe, correct me if Im wrong/missed anything] -
  • Solid Subframe Bushes
  • 2x Polybushes to replace HICAS Ball joint
  • 4 Polybushes for rear lower arms
  • DW Adjustable Toe Arms
  • DW Adjustable Traction Arms
.

But I've come to the realisation that being this close to the start of the season my priority has to be getting the car up to spec and running right. The subframe and bits can be built up off the car and swapped in inbetween Rounds 1 and 2 possibly. Or maybe between licensing and Round 1, funds pending.

Otherwise, last night I took the dash panels over to a mate of mine who is handy with metal and fabrication etc to make up the mounts for the kill switch and fire pull cable, both for in car and the scuttle panel. Also got a call from Peter @ Fabricage to say my cage is back from the powdercoaters and it should be with me the first week of the new year [didn't want it sitting in some postal depot over Christmas/New Year].

Gathering momentum now and I'm actually excited about getting the car finished!

New shoes!

These arrived today from the lovely Rare Rims, next day delivery ....

So Paulo Smithio kindly slapped some tyres on for now..

Mmmmm whitey flushness...

Got them on the car tonight, sorry for the lack of good pictures, battery is deeed plus it was dark so it was pointless getting it out of the garage for pics.

I need some slight flaring on the rears. But they is still flush.

But to say I'm slightly chuffed with them is like saying the Pope is slightly Catholic, they look awesome in the flesh!

Also got the centre console back in, just have to run the wires/cables now and start on the scuttle panel.

Konichiwa bitches

No pictures in this update unfortunately as I forgot my camera.

The roll cage arrived from Fabricage yesterday so thats another job on the 'to-do' list .

Today I did some small fiddly jobs like plumbing in the fire extinguisher and fitting the nozzles, refitting the passenger seat and centre dash tunnel whilst Paul flared my rear arches.
Now he'd obviously had his Weetabix this morning as the wheels sat flush/proud before and I now need at least 15mm spacers . However, he did a cracking job and I'm chuffed with how they came out.
I've lost some paint on the arches, as I'd expected too so as soon as I've decided which front wings I want it'll be going over to Garage Rippledrift to have the front and rear wings sprayed.

My plan was to get the car taxed tommorrow ready for the drive over to FCTuning next Tuesday however I've noticed my MOT has expired so I need to sort that now next Tuesday and maybe get down to see Steve Sadler towards the end of the month. I just hope it passes emissions as its running a bit rough and very very rich.

Thats all for now, hopefully next update Ill have some new bits to fit and some pictures of the flaring.

Quick update, no pictures.

Went over yesterday afternoon to get the car ready for MOT. Lost count of how many fuses I blew trying to wire the rear fog lamp in, I REALLY hate car electrics .

Gave up on that in the end until I get a multimeter and figure out what Im doing wrong. The wiring on this car is dodgy to say the least - proof that JDM people don't always know best!

I also recieved some items from DWHQ yesterday -
  • 17mm wheel nuts for Rotas
  • Pull cable for battery cutoff
  • Bonnet pins
  • Spin turn knob
  • Pack of cable ties
  • 2 x Fruit Salads

Ate the Fruit Salads first, then fitted the spin turn knob, then onto the bonnet pins.

I have NEVER measured and remeasured so many times in my life . Seriously scary stuff drilling holes into a perfectly good [and hard to get hold of] PS13 bonnet! Made a good job of it though and despite taking the wrong spring off the stock bonnet catch 3 times [to disable interior pull cable] it all works fine now.

I've just got to get back over to the car at some point this week and figure out what I'm doing wrong with this bloody foglamp

Thanks I'll be using it on the road from time to time. I have my iPod for these occasions. I also plan to be able to drive it to and from the track.

Obviously it will be designed for drifting but I plan to have a go at some 'grip' track days too this year, hence going for all FIA safety gear, both for the car and myself.

Further plans for the interior include respraying it all one colour, obviously fitting the cage, finding a reclining passenger bucket seat and flocking the dash. I've also sorted out some replacement Apexi gauges to fill the dash holes which I'll post up the news about once I've paid for them.

Small parts arrival update!

4 Point 3" strap FIA [2013] harnesses from Ricco Racing. Puzzles me why people spend so much on Takata harnesses when the quality on these is equal for a snip of the price. Excellent service from Richard @ Ricco Racing, despite the Royal Mail's f-up!

Chuffed as nuts with them, so much I might get a set for the passenger side when funds allow!

The spec of the engine is pretty good [see page 1]. The car is booked in for mapping with Steve Sadler of FCTuning on Sat 26th Jan. I want to see what sort of power I get from it as is, more importantly I expect it to be pretty responsive with the Apexi AX53B60 turbo I'm using, it won't set any power-records, I expect around 300hp, but it should be nice and responsive to drive.

I'll go from there, different cams and a different turbo maybe on the cards if I don't get the feel I want from the current spec.

I'm planning to do the Feb licensing day at Silverstone, the Norfolk Arena one if it goes ahead and possibly a Teeside day before Round 1. Santa Pod isn't too far from me so might try and get to one of Lex's DWYB days if there is one before then.

I've still got the job of the HICAS swap out to do, which Im putting off until the last possible minute .

Mini update.

The PS13 is booked in at Motorworx in Marlow, Bucks, tommorrow morning at 10am for Steve Sadler of FC Tuning to work his magic on it. I have some new NGK 7s to go in whilst mapping to see what difference a fresh set of plugs gapped properly does to the power/torque readings.

Its make or break time as this will either cure all my running problems or point out something is seriously wrong, but either way the car is in good hands with Steve and I'd thoroughly recommend him!

Cross everything for me please

Well theres good news and bad news.

The good news is the car made 310bhp and 262lb/ft torque and has one hell of a torque curve. It also boosts very early and is VERY responsive so should be ideal for drifting. We also only ran the car on low-boost mode on the Profec B because.....

The bad news, the turbo spat its seals out the back of the car after about 30-odd dyno runs, so lots of white smoke and unfortunately we didn't manage to finish mapping it for high boost

I have to say if anyone wants any Power FC mapping doing, Steve Sadler is THE MAN. He spent nearly all day on the car, got exactly the results I was after and is VERY knowledgeable about, well every damn thing! He is a serious boffin when it comes to Nissans and engine mapping in general and my head still hurts from trying to follow everything he was explaining to me!

Steve also threw in some new NGKs and gapped them to 0.7 for me and Carl from Motorworx ran a compression test while the plugs were out, all good across all cylinders so the engine is a good-un.

So the next stage is to whip the turbo off and send it off to somewhere to throw some new seals on and check it over. After that Steve and I will do some road mapping to finish it off, setup high boost mode and Steve is also going to visit Silverstone at a practice/license day in Feb to live map as I drift. Cannot fault the service one bit.

I have to say a big thankyou to Carl @ Motorworx in Marlow too, top man and stayed all day with us to run the dyno. Also thanks to Paul again for the trailering, top man.

Anyway, heres some pictures and the videos are still uploading

Loading up VERY early

Off the trailer at the other end.

Ready to begin.

Carl's missus's very nice EVO

Compression on cylinder 4, all good.

Power graph before and after.

The two red lines are before and the green lines after, the dotted lines are torque and the solid lines bhp. You can see the torque is up 50-60lb/ft in places! Also, check the torque curve, it peaks at about 4800 and then hold really nicely until about 6k. Perfect for drifting!

Videos to follow....

We managed 31 runs before it gave in so the mapping was pretty much finished on low boost. Theres high boost to map for still and the live mapping at Silverstone on the 16th should finish to job. At least its drivable and it idles nicely now, it was running SOO rich before it unbelieveable. Its worth noting that the graph on the last page with the 'before' and 'after' was after Steve sorted it from running rich. On the first dyno run it only made about 230-ish HP! The 'before' was after about 6 or so runs.

On a positive note too I have to say a VERY big thankyou to Stephen @ SKAY, Japan [he is sorting out all of the GhostDancer/Rick problems off his own back and doing a stella job].

He is helping me out with a full set of Apexi EL2 gauges/senders and control unit shipped over from Japan to replace the ones that I got with the car that don't work. The man is a legend .

Couple of dyno videos pre-turbo-death

http://youtube.com/watch?v=pp9RtpUAlZk

http://youtube.com/watch?v=r5vJFnnnIfg

http://youtube.com/watch?v=IzbrGAaTjb0

I've pretty much decided, thanks to Steve Usher bullying me, to change my turbo for the GT2871R. Steve Sadler is going to do me a remap and we are going to aim for 350-ish hp and lb/ft torque.

In other news, I temporarily covered up the bare metal from the arch rolling so the car can sit at work for a few days [where it'll need to be outside] while the cage footplates get welded in.

I also had a mishap test-fitting the cage and managed to crack the windscreen. Thank the sweet lord it was my front screen, which is easily replaceable under insurance, rather than one of the uber rare rear pieces of glass!

So, a pretty shitty week all in all as far as progress goes, but every cloud right?
