| Cheers guys, it's nice to have a bit of support. Jamie - the idiot's guide to clutch changes in an MX5 is: * Buy the Rod Grainger manual * Follow the instructions * The end. The clever person's guide to changing the clutch is: * earn money * pay grease monkey to do it for you. The powerplant frame is a bastard, especially the nuts on the top of the diff. Getting to the bolts on the top of the gearbox is fun too - I had to use 3 12" extensions and a UJ. Don't forget to take the slave cylinder off too (which can be done from underneath with a 12mm spanner - the instructions bleat on about going in through the wheel arch). The worst bit is the exhaust downpipe/manifold flange - I nearly break my arm on the subframe every time I try to get a spanner on the nuts. |

| Pre-competition update: Amongst many other things at the weekend I took my bonnet off to paint it and put it back on again. As I was doing this by myself on a windy day I decided not to bother with the spacers that jack up the rear of the bonnet and just put it back as standard. I just tightened the 4 nuts up finger tight, lowered the bonnet and gently nudged it with a hammer and a block of wood until all the panel gaps were even. Then I lifted the bonnet really gently and torqued up the nuts. It's lined up better now than at any time sice I bought it, despite the crashes and non-standard front bumper. It looked so good I even raised my pop-up covers to match so the front end of the car now looks like the front end of a car, rather than some bits in a heap. Other recent mods are: carbon cover for the space where the stereo was which also houses the window switches (now the centre console is in the bin), bonnet pins holding the boot down and when the post arrives I should have a new silicon heater hose to replace my perished standard one which I'll fit with a length of aluminiumised cloth as it's about an inch from the turbo downpipe. Confusingly my window switches now say "down" at the top and "up" at the bottom. I'm sure I'll get used to it before I burn the motors out. Just got to fit the competition tyres, fill the boot with tools and spares, fit four wheels in the car somewhere and I'm done. Pictures of it on track at BDC Teeside early next week via DoriStars.com ![]() |

| BDC round 1 done. Qualified 17th in Am - low enough so I could leave early, high enough not to feel like my driving hasn't improved. Mods for the next round should include something to make it more comfy to sleep in. Here are the usual excellent pics from Doristars.com ![]() You can see the new front end, the intercooler and the last of the old paint job is gone forever. It looked so good all in black it was a shame to sticker it up. Also look for blue wheel nut gayness and note the matching wheels front and back for the first time in months: ![]() Carbon fibre glinting in the sun: ![]() The least gay looking MX5 ever? ![]() The lack of “Camouflaged Learning” stickers is due to a printing error, which I’m sure the printers will put right just as soon as I’ve given them a good kicking and time-machined them back to last week. Huge thanks to Camouflaged Learning for the support and for not minding too much about the stickers. Last edited by Captain Muppet : 31-03-2008 at 11:56. | Very nice car, I run a 1.8i MK1 MX5 myself, but mine is geared more towards street racing, although I would love to have a go at drifting. I've been trying to order a Garage Vary kit for mine from Japan for a few months, but am getting no where with the order ![]() This is the kit I want. But yours looks nice too ![]() ![]() |

| Update with pics. Thanks to Harrods for the camera loan. Not that Harrods though. Firstly let’s get the engine stuff out of the way: this is my clocked Greddy turbo kit with FoMoCo truck FMIC and lots of blue pipes. I wanted black, I really did. Note the breather filter/catch tank Sunny D bottle behind the turbo heatshield. ![]() Front mount intercooler hiding in my Anhero bumper – the whole IC+rad area is boxed in with ABS sheet; some of it “formed” using a blow torch. ![]() under bonnet shot, which by the traditions of project threads should be a picture of me standing in the middle wondering where the engine is, but engine swaps are for people who aren’t as lazy as me – if it isn’t back on the road after a weekend I get really upset. ![]() Now MTV, this is where the magic happens ![]() Pikey side mount (two bits of 2” angle, 3mm thick, 350mm long, with four 8.5mm holes each side) ![]() Now for the really cool bits – the first ever close up internet pictures of my home made carbon wings – nice huh? ![]() Not quite so nice here because you can see I didn’t bother using an uncrashed wing as a mould – so it’s a bit denty ![]() This is what happens when you spank a carbon wing with a tyre wall – the same abuse wrote off the steel driver’s door ![]() Close up of the damage, contrasting cable ties used to emphasise how incredibly proud I am of hitting that wall and not caring. This shot makes me giggle uncontrollably for a few minutes every time I see it. I have to ration it to myself to get anything done ![]() In this shot you can see the slightly crumpled passenger rear wing from tagging a plastic wall during Eurodrift last year – hammered out sort of flat. I keep meaning to fix this properly… ![]() Thanks as ever to Camouflaged Learning, most especially for liking the ghosted black on black stickers when I’d promised all kinds of mad camouflaged paint, cheers Matt. ![]() |

| I've told you this before, but just in case you forgot, I absolutely love this car. Your turbo install looks considerably less shonky than you made it sound. What wingmirrors are those? I've been wanting to replace mine with some carbon F1 stylee units. I can pretend this is in the interests of losing a couple of KG of electric motors and such, but really I just think they look turbo bling. |

| Cheers! The mirrors are the cheapest convex glass ones that Demon Tweaks do (not that I got them from DT, but they are the same). The field of view is actually slightly larger than the stock mirrors so the blind spot is smaller, which helps when you have a soft top up. Plus these haven't fallen off like the stock ones did (1.6 mirrors are more feeble than 1.8s). Fitting was tricky as access inside the door for the nut is limited, but it was worth it. | Pimms O'clock ![]() | Glad to see the little beasty is at last with a hair dryer once again I can't beleive this car just keeps putting up with the caning it gets even after 2 years of my turbo'd abuse. Looking good in black & carbon lovin it. One of my fave pics of this same car back in the "old days" ![]() Last edited by cptsideways : 03-05-2008 at 13:40. |
