In my experience, an mx5 is just a Japanese E30 with less seats and no roof.

I've never drifted an Mx5, only drove one. Seemed similar, just a bit lower. I'd imagine they're somewhat like a 318is to drift.

    1.8 Mx5 is faster than an e30 318iS, mx5 has a better chassis and handles better but I am a big e30 fan too, I've had 4 e30's and 4 mx5's

I would never consider swaping an mx5 for anything less than a 325i though, unless I had plans for an engine swap or more power in the e30.

like robbs has said, anything less then a 325 would be a downgrade.

E30s are great, there are alot of options out there for more power, geometry and various parts. Unfortunately not alot of the shelf 'upgrade' wise, so you have to do some research and get your hands dirty getting it off other models ie e36 and other bigger bmws for engines. But everything is quite easy and pretty much bolt on.

I dont know much on mx5s, but e30s rust alot, and they are starting to pick up on prices so (although I dont know what e30s fetch) I wouldnt be surprised if you have to spend a few pennies to pick up a good one

only 2 e30s worth going for in my eyes are 325's and 318is's.
ive drifted both mx5s and e30's and out of the box the 30 has more lock, the bmw iS engine is a revvy little thing and fun, very similar to a mx5 1.8 and with a 40quid ebay chip they come alive. (even in the e36 m42 powered is's are decent for skidding by the way)

personally id go bmw i enjoyed driving the mx5 but i prefer bmw's

alright buddy, i got a e30 320i with a remap and chip, other than that its just stripped with a welder and it drifts lovely in the wet and dry, easily hack 3 rd in the dry, only downside to them is the alloy sump as they can get destroyed easily

I'd personally compare a 320 to a 316 but more torque, just as slow though. Sump is a major issue with them. Make/buy a sump guard?

if you have chance of the 325 its way better than the mx5 but, the mx5 is still bloomin good.

My first drift car was an E30 325 and I did not get on well with it at all, my current drift car is a 1.6 MX5 and it's my favourite out of all the cars I've ever owned.

I do love E30s in an odd way though, if I had another one I'd do it right - E36 rack, welded short case diff with a silly ratio, decent coilovers.

The 325's are ok on fuel tbh. Plus the engines take some stick!

2.5 is never going to be like modern engine but high 20s non the less,
The engine will take whatever you throw at it, just give it good oil and make sure the cooling is up to scratch,
Bmws hate going round in circles with no airflow so make sure the viscous works and stick a switched electric fan on it too

Gotta say having just come out of my e30 and into an mx5 i wouldnt wanna go back. The bmw just feels a bit floppy compared but mabye mine is just a shitter bless it.
