2 Seater skid cars: want opinions on Z3, SLK, TT and others?

Any opinions on Z3, SLK, TT Roadster as a skid car?

I want a skid car to have some fun in, doesn't have to be competitive, but I want it to skid ok. I'm up for a challenge (coming from an FD) so thats no problem. But I want something different. I also want a convertible.

Z3's have got my eye at the moment. The 3.0 can be bought for just over £3k, 230bhp+ The 2.8 for just over £2k! about 200bhp. No problem getting a manual either. I've also got a couple of sets of nice E46 M3 fitment alloys at home, not sure if the stud pattern or offset will be suitable though

SLKs for aorund £3k, 2.3 Compressor not plentiful in manual but they are out there. Bit heavy?

Then TTs. Obviously need converting to RWD, but the engines in these are good and easy to get big power

    Any opinions on them?

Yeah thats the way I'm leaning towards. Just need to work out if its worth paying an extra grand going from the 2.8 to the 3.0 and gaining 30bhp? Normally I'd say no but it must make quite a bit of difference, 0-60 goes from 7.6 to 6.0

But an extra grand on a skid car? that could be coileys, hydro, etc etc i.e. things that imo would make much more of a difference than 30 bhp!! Depends where your planning on skidding it but 200bhp should be enough for a lot of places!!

Is it not just extra computer wizardry that helps the 3.0 be that much faster? Im guessing thats what you pay extra for. But it could also be a bit of a fight if its all electronically controlled, may not like being sideways and trying to straighten itself up all the time..?

I may be being a bit of a numpty but I just assumed the difference between the 2.8 and the 3.0 was an increase in engine size? Ie 2.8 litre to a 3litre? But if you are right and they share the same engine then that means its probably not hard to get the 2.8 to 3.0 power?

And good point on the hydro, coileys comment. Money is a little tight right now so it would make sense. And lets face it, without the likes of Mallory / Gerards having a gazillion bhp is less of a priority. Mmm, just need to get out of a life time habit of always wanting the top of the range :/

And could always keep an eye out for a 3.0 S50 unit to bung in at a later date - M3 powerz

My 46 M3 goes sideways a treat with all the shit turned off, if the z3 is anything like that I'd be happy with it for a fun skidder!

Furry muff, but if you think converting a TT to RWD is going to be cheaper than just buying a 350 in the first place .........

Z3's drift alright, a mate has a 2.3 that Ive tried but its underpowered, Id have thought a 2.8 with the M50 fanimold would be more than capable, if a bit soft

Same for my E46 M3 and the Z4M. I think it is a lot of the Mercs where you turn the TC off but its not 'really' off

If SLK 230 Kompressors share more than just the engine from the C230 Kompressors, that will drift awesomely once the diff is welded.

Lock as standard better than people spend many many hundreds trying to get with other cars by modding shiz.

A quick youtube shows pretty much nothing of SLK's drifting, so you will either be king of the world or it will be crap

Appears that SLK's are O-pen diffs as standard too

Same as when I bought my C230 Kompressor. Never seen one drift, never reccomended, never nothing.

But then even with my lame skills it turns out even a cheapo one with a few tweaks was fucking ace, loads of lock, proper smoke machine, miles faster than E46 330ci's etc, mint handling, and miles better than the usual similar priced alternatives everyone buys.

The first shape CLKs were steering box, same as C230Ks are, so should have mega lock. In fact suspension and everything is about the same as C230Ks from what I understand.
    No idea about later ones.

Basically, everyone writes off or reccomends cars purely on what everyone uses, so nothing different ever gets tried, just slated regardless. Yeah there's the safe bets everyone uses, but that don't mean there isn't better that nobody has bothered trying.

Well let me make things a little easier by saying dont even bother thinking about something like the TT that needs converting from 4wd to 2wd. Why dont you just be boring and get a normal skid car for the first time ever so it's cheap and easy? Karins just agreed that she doesn't mind driving the Beemer if I get it a bit more civilised. We need two run abouts so I reckon another dirty Nissan is on the cards for me later in the year if the caged FD doesn't feel so friendly for the shopping run
