Anybody with Derv Drifting EXPERIENCE

You guessed it, I'm considering buying a diesel! A 325tds to be exact.

I've decided the silvia is to go over the coming months and after lots of consideration this has been my next best match! I've been looking for something cheap, RWD, somewhat tuneable and relatively economical, so a bimmer diesel fits the bill!

I'm sure I can get the thing to skid with a bit of boost and a welder, but obviously I'm gonna have F all rev range to play with, obviously the engine behaves/performs differently to the petrol turbo's im used to!

In a nutshell what experience do any of you have with this?

I'm not really after general opinion as I've made my own More so what people have witnessed/experienced themselves!

Cheers

I think kickinggriffin is drifting a diesel BMW at pod tomorrow, so he might be the best person to ask tomoz night.

Chunk had a go in an old bimmer once or twice to i think.

Yeah I've spoken to Kickingriffin, he seems quite confident with the bm, looking forward to finding out how he gets on! Just thought I'd see what others thought if anyone had tried it!

if people can skid shitebox 1.4L volvo 340`s then having a play in a diesel bimmer etc is gonna be easy.

Midrange skidding for the win!

I Haven't laughed so much all day!

I'm selling it regardless so I can save up for a house! That's the only viable excuse I could possibly make for selling it anyway!

I'm gonna have a go anyway! Expect It's inevitable I'll end up regretting it, but I'm gonna try it, worst comes to worst, I'll slap an open diff in and sell it!

Then choose amongst the shitters on offer

A chipped 330/530d sport with M-tech diff in the back would be savage I'm sure.

I am 99.9999% certain this will be my next road weapon later this year. There were quite a few quick 330d's over at the ring last time I went - and a few were a bit skiddy too round brunchen (or however you spell it).

Revs are obviously a problem - but do you really need revs when you have nearly 400lb/ft of torques available at almost tickover.

Yeah but we're not talking about a 330d - we're talking about a 525tds with all of its 146bhp (the same power as my Scorpio, lol)

There are a few (zim zimmer powered) derv Omegas skidding in Scandanavia. They run massive truck turbos. There's a video kicking around somewhere..

i know a lad who drifts a e34 525tds its chipped has a bigger turbo and it is ok it makes about 210bhp if i remember correctly but its the torque that is impressive its over 300lbft
its laggy as hell and its on boost rips like mad and then its all over way too fast its a bit all or nothing
it does not hold him back though and he does well with it to be fair here is a piccy

as a side note, i gots a 525tds for towing the m3 about - do we reckon chipping it will absolutely ruin the fuel economy or make for a smoother, and hence more fuel efficient towing experience?

I only gets about 22mpg towing at the moment so anything is a bonus...

22mpg towing?! Really?? Same as my old 735i towing on cruise control then... lol

I reckon for towing the economy would be better, since the extra torques would help it haul itself along better. Would imagine fitting a decent intercooler would help quite a bit too.

john with the above car said it is a little better if he drives it normally but he also says that around town and cruising the car is not boosting at all now as it later in the rev range but when its being driven hard its poor, as in he says worse than the petrol equivalent and he loses all the benefits he bought it for in the first place and the engine is ubber heavy to boot and has massive understeer problems but having never driven it its hard to say it does shift though its surprisingly fast

your best of (if you have the grunts) drifting mid range in a higher gear as you run out of revs and powaaars holding it like a petrol

Thats from my experiance anyhoo
