With other threads regarding the closure of RoseGreen's gates to most things RWD, I've decided to set up a thread to discuss to next moves for the next generation of Irish drifters.

I've been thinking along the lines of getting a group together or setting up some sort of organisation to attempt to perhaps get access to funding (there is a grant of upto €100,000 available to recreational facilities). Probably not a hope of getting a penny out of any Government related folk but it's just a thought..

As an organisation there's also the possibility of lobbying the RSA or other bodies about the fact that there's no place to practise drifting apart from and roundabouts, T-junctions and the likes..

Anyway, that's just some of my thoughts, I'm hoping people will add to them, modify them and better them and offer suggestions.

Please don't spam the thread guys, only post if you've got a decent point to make or suggestion

good thread!!

any place to practice is welcome and this really needs to be brought to the attention of the authorities... the Gardai and the RSA. i suppose if there is a grant available then theres no reason why it cant be awarded to drifters.

if a good enough case is brought forward anything can happen, ireland has a serious lack of motorsport facilities already, the closure of Rosegreen had really made life bad for anybody who wants legal practice.

hopefully some sort of group can be set up to voice our concerns.

They give heroin addicts needles but wont give lads places to practice safely off the road ...

good idea, it might help stop drifting or speeding on the roads, letting us blow off steam on a track, maybe setting up a club

Had a quick look at the new drift track in Kiltorcan at the weekend, could be the 'new' Rosegreen for practice, but karting there is still the main business by far, but the potential is there for a great practice venue

its realy hard to know how it will progress. for those who are unaware, Paddy-Drift has been set up as a drifting club and has a good few internet members, and good turn outs for the previous trackdays. We will be getting a full website soon, so that is a club if people want to join and be heard as a group.

the hardest part of trying to set up a drift track would be getting planning permission

its hard enough to get permission to build a house, never mind a track with noise, crowds and all the associated stuff

100 grand would only be the tip of the iceberg tbh

anyone on here work in the council that could look into this?

What about DDT raceway near letterkenny in donegal, i know its only an oval track but wasnt that set up for the exact purpose of letting youngsters blow off steam in a safe area, as far as i know even the local gaurds backed it.

Ive looked into this recently aswell, Getting the grants can be the easy thing as someone else said above its geeting the location and planning, Ive got the perfect place behind my current work but the guy who owns it wont sell, It used to be an old airfield but there is so much room around it to expand and make a very awsome track with the right backing. The other thing is that according to rumours a local council is looking to take over Ballykelly army camp when it closes to create a motorsport centre to take the messing of the streets and give people a place to go, they are having a huge motorsport festaval in July which Ive been roped into to put together a drift demo/event at, alongside rally, drag etc etc.

100% true. There's plenty of karting tracks around Ireland. Perhaps funding could be applied for by the karting track owners to get their tracks up to scratch to accomodate drifting events.

some people dont understand what money is involved when hosting a drift event ..
take JDM allstars .. £10 entry .... how many people were there .. hundreds!!! thats alot of money.
they just dont get it!!

the ddt's a stock car track, they do hold drift days but that usually involves bout 20 cars on the oval at once crashin into each other and doin doughnuts, not safe 2 take a decent car in!!!! Last time i was ther they had a 1.3 colt on mcdonalds trays skiddin around 4 half an hour!!!

The donegal drift championship last year was pretty good wit a decent track and brilliant practise area but planning permission got that 2 i think!!!

Ive just spotted this thread, Ive been talking to an MLA for Northern Ireland government and hes keen to ask questions about the possiblity of a government funded project. Hes looking more info on this i.e crowd attendances, costs, companies already involved etc..

As its sort of in his field he is a good contact within the government to deal with.

I was looking to get talking to a member of Prodrift to see if they can assist in any way. Theres no point in me going to him with estimates and having no real point of contact for whats the biggest Drift organisation in ireland.

I was pushing the cross border and cross community aspect thats well known in the sport. If i could get the like of Prodrift Europe to put their pennys worth in, we might be able to get somehwere with this.

If it was well presented we might be able to push for an international quality racetrack, with an eye to attracting sports from other countrys outside Northern Ireland, Touring car for example.

With the current interest that Northern Ireland is getting from America we could also push the angle of getting the likes of Formula Drift involved.

If its done correctly we might have a shot at doing this.

Good thinking batman. Cross community/cross border ideas always get the big nobs thinking, D'mac this is the second time you've stated a thread about this i think you've got the determination to make a go of it. Take the bull by the horns and get some ideas out there. If i can help in any way shape or form i will, keep me posted

and i really think we should make a concerted effort together to do something about this.
I'll be talking to the MLA in question again soon and see what sort of info we should be looking at gathering.
Any info we could glean from Driftworks wouldnt go amis either tbh, Its all about trying to get actual numbers of drifters and potential drifters, as well as the advantages of having a racetrack , i.e, gets young people off the roads, somewhere to vent their "boyracer" attitude.
Teaching driving skills, allowing young drivers to push their limits in a safe environment without fear of death with one mistake.
After we make a good argument for the value of a quality reactrack then its down to costs of building one etc, but for now we need to concentrate on the reasons for getting one.
