e28 or stick to mainstream

I sold my 328 which was drifty but not 100% driftable as I had to drive it for work

Now I have a work car am looking to get something drift - which I will keep and do up , much like sammysideways - a real project.

Have been looking at e28 , the m535i to be exact..... other than a few e28 threads on here - I want to know if this is worthy of a stripped out, coilovers etc or should I just hit the mainstream s13/14.

Don't want to spend more than 2 grand to start with

I'd say unless you are up for lots of custom stuff and innovation then don't go for an e28. If you are, then they are gangster old nazi wagons and deserve some lovin'.

I still hold rights on slammed deep dish no bumpered super-lightweight e28s though so get your own style.

e28 to have more fun and be different (I would), but S body to make your life easier...

IF I was you and wanted to be different, I'd have a quick look at something like this, immense fun!
Chevrolet : chevy 88 5l rs convertable

I loved my e28 and imo and for my style/lack of ability it was the best car for drifting I have ever tried.
I have owned e36 m3, s13, merc coss, numerous other RWD's and driven lots including 360bhp skylines, 400bhp sierra cossies etc.

Im sure its all about what you feel comfortable in and a e28 suited me but I reccomend one.

If you want to build a comp spec car then choose something a lot more mainstream as, even though most parts are available, good suspensions and stuff is mega bucks.

great cars especially for beginners i guess. Lack of finesse at higher speeds as with all bmws due to the excessive rear camber/toe issues when slammed. All the rest of the basework is there, and contary to popular belief they are not as heavy as they look and very very well balanced cars, better balanced id say than an m20 engined e30.

your 2 enemies will be rust and rear camber.... and more rust

I didn't think mine was very balanced at all, felt like it was very nose heavy. This might have been due to having a physically longer wheelbase and being sat further forward in the car, but I'm pretty sure my e30 feels nicer.

My e28 was frickING stripped though which would affect it.

what about an E34. I have just bought one, it feels very planted, i little harder to keep the back out with the stock lsd. I think i need to be going faster. I'm used to having the power to hold it out so this will take some practice.

e34's are 50/50 weight distribution so aslong as it has a bit of grunt ie 525i it would be fine.

i pimped mine today, fitted M5 E39 wheels, lowered springs, all 4 new front arms, bushes, full stainless steel exhaist. Officially pimped and i'm knackered! hopefully the lower ride will make it a little less understeery.

When I drove a completely standard 535i with a welded diff and stripped out it didn't understeer, ever.

E28's are fricking sweet. I agree with mike in that mine and bons felt a little nose heavy, the way it turned in was... Odd, felt like the back was rolling over the front, but it was AMAZZZING. Really good fun, plenty of power (528) and took a beating too. Lots of lock standard too.

I say do it. The E28 i had was probably my favourite BM ive had, including my M3 (cus its too nice to wreck, the E28 was a proper missile that didnt need looking after!).

Get one, weld it, get some decent suspension and bushes and try to sort out the camber issues and go have some fun!

Blah blah blah im awesome. My E34 was sweet but did like to push its nose wide when driving fast.. Probably the bad tyres didnt help!
