| Isn't the problem with the 1.6 diffs the tiny crown wheel, rather than the diff it's self? The 1.8 diff has a bigger diameter gear and is a lot stronger - MX5OC will have details of how to swap to a 1.8 diff. Get the big diff then get a spangly Kazz upgrade. I'm running a 1.8 diff as a welder in my 1.6. |

| I have the Kaaz 1.5 way (from ) fitted to my 97 1800 and have so far had no problem with it. It just takes a bit of getting used to the noises and the occasional judder pulling out of junctions etc.A few words of advice though: Don't go to Mazda for your new bearings (I got a pair from a company who just do all sorts of bearings for less than the cost of one from Mazda) and get a new crush washer to make sure there's no excessive play (I didn't know to do this and just live with the occasional clunk, but plan to rebuild with a new washer soon). If you plan to drive the car on the road I wouldn't recommend welding your diff. My 5 is a daily driver and I think the 1.5 way is about as extreme as I'd like to go for both comfort and cornering ability. I know many people on here live with welded diffs, so it's not impossible, just beware of understeer. Good luck if you go for it. £500 well spent IMHO. |
