    SR20 engine rattle

Ive a blacktop sr20 that has a small rattle. when you start the car from cold you cant hear it but as it warms up it starts to come through, doesnt seem to much like a bottom end but it sounds like its somewhere in the head. When you rev it to about 2k and above you cant hear it but as it comes down to idle it comes through again. its a vvt sr with about 110,000 on it, dropped the oil from it today and used engine flush, the oil seems fine nothing suspect in it. Replaced it with mobil 10 60 and it sounded a small bit worse after i started it.

Can anyone shed light on this?

    Vee Vee Tee.

Don't worry about it, common on the blacktops.

yeah i used engine flush because the car was lying up for a bit(so im told) and just wanted to flush the whole system out. can the solenoid be changed without going near the timing chain?

Nope. It holds the chain in place. To swap, you have to slacken the tensioner, undo the nearest cam bolts and jiggle free.

Leave it, it doesn't hurt anything. You could put a redtop (non-vvt) one in, but it's pointless.

EDIT: Just to add, the VVT is a little gearing device that gives your car about 40 extra horses, i THINK it retards the timing at the top end of the revs to achieve this. It uses oil pressure to work, and they commonly die because of lack of oil pressure.

Big ends will rattle on start up for a millysecond then will rattle 3k and above, Defo sounds like vvt rattle, why do people still use engine flush!! The stuff should be banned from every shelf, I thought the oil grade for these were 10w/50? Could be wrong though

Once i know its the vvt and not something tryin to knock its way out of the block im not worried, as i said it doesnt sound like bottom end related so im ok there.

i used 15w50 on sr's and rb's before, i was told by a few that the 10w60 is a good alternative. I think nissan recommends 5w30

it happens to every blacktop sr20det, dont worry about it, my mates sounded like a VW TDI lump on idle at one point and still kept running
