    Yo dudes...

Started this thread as a refence point for Holset turbos, HX35 in particular...

I have a brand new Holset HX35w that I'm planning on fitting to my 1jz in the near future and I'd like to know more about what I'm doing, this will also be helpful for others in the future.

From what I read, there is different housings available.. 9cm & 12cm.. How do I determine which mine is, which bit do I measure?
It was original an internally wastegated housing which iv change to an externally wastegated housing.

What flange does it have, T3 I believe?

Whats the ideal size of Wastegate? (What determines size of Wastegate? Housing/Trim size, Boost, Etc??)

This is my turbo, I'll get some better pics later..

    6dace6ba.

    d76e641d.

    Stav, I await your input:thumbs:
Interested in any other info you have and what upgrades/improvements can be done.

There are a few questions I would like to see answered too, so I'll keep an eye on this!

Mine is a T3 flange, externally wastegated. I don't know what type of wastegate I have, but will get some detailed pictures at the weekend.

    Mine looks like this:

The 'bad' thing is though, I'm fitting this to an SR20, obviously four cylinder... lag! :wack: It should be good fun though, I think.

The thing at the top, well W on a HX35 just means internal gate, and that one isnt, so it's a HX35.

That turbine housing is fucking MASSIVE, ie shit, actual size will be inside one of the scrolls of the turbine inlet, but regardless it's too big.

Smallest HX35 housing is a 12cm. Almost all are T3 flange but some oddball huge turbines are T4.

Why did you change housing? I'd put money the internal gate housing was a LOT smaller (ie acutally maybe useable) than that monstrosity on it now.

Wastegate size, bigger is never a bad thing, but tbh even a small one rarely causes issues, I'm running a 600bhp Holset similar to that one jus without the spastic size turbine housing and a 38mm Turbonetics wastegate and no bother.

Counteract- Yours has a 60mm ebay wastegate (HKS GT2 copy) and a far far smaller housing than one one in the OP, yours actually prob is a 12cm.

Sorry for a slight thread highjack Dale, I suppose this is directed at Stavros mostly as you seem to be the turbo guru.

I wouldn't mind top mounting my 1JZ in 2013, I assume Holset is the way to go? I want about 400/450bhp? What spec turbo would be best for me to look for?

    Thanks

HX35 with a 12cm turbine housing is the common/easy effective one for that power on a 2.5.

One of what? A 12cm HX35 would be fine on a big power track/drag CA HX35 where it's all from 5-8k. A proper twin scroll manifold and a 12cm HX35 on a CA I reckon would be full boost from about 4k considering a twin scroll on a 2ltr gives full boost at about 3.5k, and that'd work on a drift car if you not afraid to rev it.

But that's a 600bhp turbo, there are a shitload smaller Holsets, right down to ones good for no more than 250bhp.

My one is still a 600bhp Holset (albeit not a HX35) and I'm at 1.5bar@4000rpm on a 2ltr single scroll.

Few extra pics with tape measure, 60mm is in the centre so you can see where 120mm is...
I think it looks like it could be a 120mm no?

It's a twin scroll housing too, or are they all like that?

I've no idea what you're measuring but doing that won't tell you anything on any turbo.

Look inside one of the scrolls like I said, it will have the size. Either way, it's enormous and a bit useless.
Why did you change from the original housing? Bet that was way smaller.

And yes, all HX's are twin scroll. Not all Holsets, but all HXs.

Iv had a good look on the housing to see if it has any markings, can just about make out HOLSET on the side but appears to be no other markings.

I changed the housings because the original one was internal Wastegate, and I want external Wastegate. My mate had this housing on his shelf so thought I'd use it...
It was quite a while ago I changed them, can't remember if the other one was smaller or not, my mate has still got it so I'll go get it back at somepoint.

Just weld up the flapper on an internal, job done. Mine's an internal with the internal bit welded up.

So INSIDE the turbine inlet, in one of the two scrolls, there isnt a number? (proably 20 something going by the pic as its massive)

Either way, I'd be on the lookout for a 12cm housing, as that one is massive.

Is that one deffo a HX35 one? As HX40 and plenty of others will bolt on, but will be bored for even bigger turbine wheels, so will not only spool bad as that thing is massively oversized to be any use, but if its not for a 35 the gas will just flow past the wheel in the gaps and barely spin it.

that housing the op has on that hx35 looks to be about 16 cm housing or bigger, which is un-usable. u want to look for a 12 cm housing or a special made housing by bullseye power or tims turbos. stavros is right, typically there will be a number on the inside of one of the scrolls or a number on the outside somewhere. all hx35's are t3 footprints. im gonna run a 50 mm hks wastegate which should work great

Im going to get the original housing back and see if there is a number on the inside of that one, then I can compair the 2.

I did think about just welding the flap up, but thought this was an easier option at the time... Also wanted the V-band outlet...

It's defiantly off an hx35 though, and fits the wheel perfectly.

I got my 12cm exhaust housing through today, thanks to Mitch @ DriftGarage:thumbs:

And yes, you are right Stav, the 12cm one is defiantly smaller than the housing that's currently on my turbo...

Next Question.. External Wastegate... What Size?
I need to buy a new one, what's the ideal size, looking to run about 1.3-1.5bar of boostings..
    And how is this calculated?

And after recommendations.. Probilly get an eBay special, but there is so many.. Whats a reasonable quality one?
Either that, or I'll try and find a JDM branded one secondhand... I'd like to buy a new turbosmart one but they are shiz loads of wedge, more than my turbo cost..lol
