it's very hard to get the full car in focus, pin point suhtter release is required when the car & camera would make such a picture and unless your lucky or get used to a corner enough to be able to do it it rarely happens, or unless the car if fully side on

this is a shot i got last weekend at 1/25, out of 100 pictures taken that day about 60 are very good and most are at 1/40 but as this lotus took the same line at same speed every time i thought i'd try it and it worked after 1 or 2 tries at 1/25!

U mean taking snaps of cars at night?

Pretty tricky, using a higher ISO will give u slightly faster shutter speeds, but you'll get a lot of noise.
Use a flash - really depends on what shot ure after.

Oh, and welcome to DW!

Great start dude, just be weary of your focus point as some of the cars are out of Focus. Reckon you could be better off trying to stick to 1/60 above for the mean time while panning until you get proper used to it, If you want to get places, trust me we all do, your work has to be pin sharp. As Ross said, its aint sharp enough until you can see the stitching in the leather ....

i had real trouble shooting night drift at the local track, the flash bounced of the smoke and just whited the shots out, other than that high ISO, manual focus and fast glass (f2.8ish)

i currently shoot with a canon 1Dmk2n, sigma 70-200 f2.8 and somtimes with a 2x teleconverter too. the tracks here are rather strict, even for accredited media
also use a canon 350d with sigma 24-70 for wider angle stuff (like stitching multiple images of the same car in one corner)

my normal settings are AI servo focus, center focus point only, 50Iso, single shot mode (even though my cam is capable of 8fps) TV mode (shutter priority) at 1/80 - 1/200th sec, normally 1/125, with the 2x teleconverter i normally run higher shutter speeds, up to 1/320th and a monopod.
the cam with just the 70-200 on get handheld, im normally steady enough

some tips that may help,
i use custom function 4.3 on my canons, to use the autofocus i have to press the *button on the back of the camera, it feels more natural to me and i have set my 1 series up with another custom function which allows me to use 2 different buttons on the back of the cam to change focus points just by moving my thumb to a different button

i normally use the center focus point but sometimes use others to adjust where the car is sitting in frame
when a car comes up the track, put your active focus point on a spot on the car (i normally use the wing mirror) and try to keep it there as the car passes, it takes practice but as you improve your shots will get alot sharper

another handy hint is FILL THE FRAME WITH THE CAR - that way it saves you time later in editing them

last handy hint from me - have plenty of card space, the last event i went to i took 7gb and when i came home i had 128mb free on one of my cards, everything else was full

Camera Choise on a Budget??

Hi all

Ive been taking photos of cars for years but only making the use of basic camera equipment till now! I currently use a Canon Power Shot A70 compact digital camera (3.2mega pixels), but I find it doesnt have enough Zoom when doing trackside shots for example!!

Basicly im looking for a better quality camera with a bigger zoom, but on a budget!! This is only until I get my Propper SLR !!

I spotted this camera going fairly cheap (around £150) in various shops and online but I could do with your opinion on it!!

This One.......
Fuji Finepix S5600 Digital Camera : Digital Cameras : Prosumer Cameras : Buy a Fuji Finepix S5600 Digital Camera:Fotosense

Any advice would be gratefully recived!!

Cheers, Scott

i dont realy know that much about it but everything i have read seems ok epecialy for £150, the 10x zoom is equivenent to a 380mm lens so you will have plenty of range , the only drawback i can see is that it runs on AA batterys but tbh i cant see the battery life being any worse than my d200 so yeah should be a good un as far as i can see.

My old S7000 ate batteries, usually needed 2 sets to cover 1 day,D-SLR's last all day on 1 battery most of the time

i'll get through 3 batterys on average day and thats with the auto review and vr turned off, i do a fair bit of sorting in camera but it still sucks ass. basicly this weekend i expect to be out of power before im out of memory.

Cheers for your replies

I normally use the fancy "Duracell Ultra M3" batterys as they seem to last way longer than anything else!!

I used cheapo "longlife" batterys once and they lasted 3 photos in my little canon lol

Really?! Ive never managed to run down a battery in a day yet. I probs will this w/e coz i'll be shooting a lot!!
Doesnt the D200 have the fancy 'live' battery meter? My D70s is a bit annoying, as soon as one notch goes out, thats the battery almost gone!
