Here are a few of mine from Round 2 in Watergrass hill.

Sorry about the quality, but i did a batch resize and the quality went down the pan.

Not really looking at my technique yet, just trying to get the cars in the right spot and take something that resembles a picture, hope to start improving on what ive done soon though.

Teh rest can be found here clicky click

I just saw this thread!
I've only just started using 35mm (after using a digital point-and-shoot for ages), I'm finding it's an expensive and slow learning curve. I guess I'm still shooting like a digital camera - too many safety shots! I couldn't get any decent action pics at Rockingham, I wasn't 100% concentrating on shooting (I was watching a lot as well as toy-drifting) and the track was always obscured no matter which side I shot from ... didn't fancy elbowing my way to the front of the scrum on the pitroof either! Here's my favourite pic from Birmingham Wild Tracks - the defocused fence adds a nice effect I like the deep, rich blacks I get from film.

What are people's strategies for Silverstone in October?????? I've never been there before. Is there anywhere to get good low angle track shots?

Hoping it shouldnt be too disasterous next weekend, first event with new camera so dont know what to expect ... Kills me that It may look good on the LCD screen and look awful when put on PC ...

hmmm not sure, personaly i always find silverstone a bit of a bitch for photographs, it depends what part of the track they are using, if its the same bit our guys use probably the outside of luffield 2 but because of the high fence you cant get that low, if you can blag your way trackside there is a photographer post inbetween brooklins (i think thats what its called) and luffield gives you a good veiwpoint of the transition and the exit to the luffield complex, but you need alot of mm on you lense. btw love your nz shots

well well, i know paddy to see and none of the rest but you's may have seen my pictures of the D1 Irl series.

i have been shooting motorsport for a few years now mostly rallying as it's huge here in Ireland but when my mates started the drifting championship i tagged along for the craic and love it to bits and it makes interesting pictures. like paddy i was shooting with a fuji S5000 and using a general shutter of about 200 for most things but got me a 350D with 18-55 and 55-200 MKII lens' and a 380ex flashgun.

so mondello was the first round i got to with the new gear and by feck it impressed me with the quality and ease of use i fire it on Tv which sets the aperture automatically meaning i can pan using AI servo and it'l ajust the F rating to the light at the time i'm about to shoot i was shooting anywhere from a shutter speed of 1250 right down to 40 at a point getting some really mad looking results as one small section in centre of the car id perfect focus but the edges tend to blur into the totally gone b/g most of the images i took at 125 or 100 in mondello though with a few at about 200 to get a good chrisp car like paddy captured nicely all images taken at ISO 400

keep up the good work chaps and this is a good thread i have to say also, i am happy with the resiults i got from mondello but please leave feedback of your opinions !

Graham

examples and i really love the 1st one -

shutter 1/125
F No 1/16

shutter - 1/800
F No - 1/7.1

shutter - 1/80
F No - 1/20

shutter - 1/160
F No - 1/13

this weekend will be my first drift events with the new dslr...

still getting used to the setting.... the only problem i find on the lower shutter speeds is capturing the shot i want... my boys have recently been brought one of those huge trampoleens (sp?). it's got an 8ft diameter... and to catch them whilst bouncing in the air, without being blurred, i set the TV to 1/4000...

but i shall find out at the weekend what setting is best...

Welcome aboard Graham !

Was very happy with the camera at Mondello, loaded off around 740 on the day and uploaded around 630 and that was just on the one CF card (1GB)

Used mostly P and M modes all day and never higher than 400 ISO

1/250th of a second, f5.6 @ 170mm ISO400

1/500th of a second, f8.0 @ 290mm ISO200

1/125th of a second, f7.1 @ 130mm, ISO100

Takes a lot of practice with a new camera,I learned the hard (ish) way at Mondello, got some great ones, and some diabolical ones aswell . What I like about the Fuji is that the software for transferring photos to your PC includes details for each photo such as shutter speed,ISO rating and whether it was in Autofocus or manual,so hopefully you can learn from your mistakes (or just read the manual even more at bedtime)

Also when shooting, use rechargable batteries, last longer and dont decide to intermittentley die during the day Unless you got posh power for your digi slr's

missy, practice, practice, practice, thats the only way, you could have the best kit money could buy but if your tecnique is iffy so will your results, now youve got the dslr you will be able to see the mistakes straight away and adjust acordingly, rather than getting a roll developed and being dissapointed and tying to remember what you did. i garentee by the end of the weekend and a few hunrdred shots you will have some great pictures, if you find yourself stuck on anything give me a shout i'll be glad to help out
i was in a photographic rut before i got the d100, after birmingham wheels last year the first time i used it i was as happy as a dog with two cocks with the results, got rid of all my gemlins, saying that a new bunch have just moved in now but i'll get rid of those with more experence and practice.

Thanks! (Especially the kind words on my NZ pics ) From earlier posts it sounds like blagging media access is going to be pretty tough, I'll have to investigate though.

This thread is really educating me on what sort of exposure times to try, I need to keep them a bit faster than I had been (generally stay above 1/100 unless tracking is truly spot on), and I probably don't really need that can of ISO1600 I thought I'd try! (Was hoping for some dirt drops or shredding rubber freeze frames) Terribly inconvenient that the cars are actually going around a corner just as you want to catch them! I can pan with a degree of stability (slightly better than rubbish, after some practise with a camcorder) but haven't got a chance of capturing the cornering dead-on enough to motion blur the background. I'll probably stick to trying for depth of focus effects instead for those sections. The entries looks like an easier place to track for the motion blur, but I prefer the composition of cutting across the apex, more perpendicular - especially with a twin round.

Which tracks give the best access - without needing to be acredited media - that I should especially look out for ? It sounds like I might spend more time enjoying the show at Silverstone then, than trying to capture it on film.

jonjon - By all means have a go at silverstone anyway, it's not that good for pics [nowhere particularly great to stand, nothing to pan against but the odd cone!] but it's still good practice. From looking at your other pics I'm sure you'll do really well anyway

Missy, you used shutter speed 1/4000?! bring it down a little!! As ross said it's mainly down to practice, keep trying diffrent speeds and you'll be fine.

I'm getting some more cash in soon so I'm going to buy myself a monopod so I can use even slower shutter speeds. Will hopefully get chance to go out and buy it before my next drift day.

Ross, how are you getting on with your photoshop? Post examples, please!!

These were taken on a P200 mainly as test shots but some of them came out pretty well:

I'll be using my Canon 350D next time round to try and get some really nice ones

The 2nd one has been trimmed and enlarged quite a bit hence its a bit grainy.

To be honest i'm about as clueless as they come with photography, know some of the basics by just messing around, but generally just try and get a good angle, zoom etc. rather than try any of the tricks (doesn't help with the digital camera, not the best and tries to do everything for you)
