Any other views on the D80 (esp with the 18-135 kit lens)?

Obviously i will be looking to get better glass long term, but of late i have not shot longer than 50mm at a DWYB day / Drift Demo.... Already got feedback off Ross lol, but what do the rest of you think about the D80? It's getting close to crunch time now, hopefully will have the dollars at the end of the month. Already got a freezer full of food so can skint myself for the cause!!!

Gimme your views fellow togs!!!!

fuji Finepix A500 is around the £60 mark pretty good kit for not much more than a stick of fags or a Praktica DCZ 7.1 for around the £100, the Olympus FE-170 is a freaky looking fricker but ment to be ok

hp wise a canon 1dsmkIII will cost you about £160 a month over a 3 year deal so everything else will be cheeper.

I've wanted a better camera for ages and since all my stuff was stolen im just replacing it all now. I've read a couple reviews and bit the bullet.

I've ended up with a Sony DSLR-A200 with a 18-70mm CZ lens which if im honest i have no idea if thats good or not, but all part of the learning. £260 was the price i got it for, and it sounded pretty cheap for slr territory.

Any good/bad news for the A200?

It's basically a Minolta... Sony bought them out when I was working for one of the more well known high street photo retailers. Minolta certainly aren't bad for your first SLR, it'll give you pretty much all you ask of it!
That aside, pretty much any Nikon dSLR has a Sony sensor inside it anyway, so rest assured

I've been reading this thread with interest now - I haven't been to many drift events, a couple of the better results i've had so far include the below.....

Those were shot with a Canon EOS 300D (6.3mp) with a 70-200L F2.8IS lens - these were taken at Japshow (there are more pics posted in the media section)

Oh, just found a couple more that I took with the 300D at JTS last year.....

Now i've upgraded my camera to a Canon EOS 40D (also bought a Speedlite 580 EX II flashgun with it) and want to really improve on those shots...the only other lens i've got is the 18-55mm lens that came with the 300D (will fit the 40D).

I'd love to get some pics as good as the ones i've seen on this forum - I think they are fantastic - maybe I could catch up with some of you to get some tips?

extreme close up / wide angle pan

one of my craziest shots, just before he hit the tractor tyre I was standing behind

another wide angle pan (these have to be some of the scariest shots I have ever taken as the subject is only about 1m away)

from a different angle

I have been photographing for about 5 years now and mainly specialising in automotive advertising and i must say it is the worst career choice i have ever made...no work what so ever.
Using Nikon d1x (with a d2x sensor in it) nikon d70, 18-70mm nikon lens, 28-300mm sigma lens, 3 metz flashguns, a sb80dx flashgun.

Specialized automotive photography is a seriously big bucks game. A typical print advert campaign for any manufacturer will consist of marketeers, designers, photographers, lighting experts, location scouts, detailers, professional image enhancers and a shed load more people working long hours assisting and doing countless other jobs. Then you have to remember the other agencys competing against them for that particular job (if its an open tender.)

If you think that you can just stroll in with consumer level DSLR's and be fighting off work from major industry players, your very naive.

10 minutes on Google will show you who the major agencys are. You try get in contact with them, see if they are hiring. If your exceptionally lucky you might get a job making tea, then you spend years working your way up. If you showup with a portfolio full of car images, you can forget about it. These places want to see diversity, innovation and perfect production skills.

It's an area I have massive respect for and would love experience in it but at the end of the day its not my cup of tea.

evening all

not to mention the fact that many of the major car manufacturers are now moving over to cgi to create adverts for new vehicles! i have worked with a company who are doing alot of work in this field and its unreal. i expect that cgi will take control of a massive amount of the industry over the next few years, granted that there will always be a need for location shots and backdrops etc but the cars themselves will be built up in cgi.

some companys will obviously continue to work with photographers but things are changing, automotive photography at industry level is moving into the resale market i.e thousands of standard boring photos of cars that are being sold off after fleet service and things like that

im currently work with a company that has a annual turnover of 4 billion pounds + in the resale market. i think that unless as paddy says being that you work your way up, know people or just get extremely lucky with a big company/agent then money is in magazine/publication work and also on a personnel client basis photographing cars on individual commisions.

any who do i need to talk to get trackside at drift events? are they at a level yet where media rights are owned by an outside company in the UK. just starting to look into it, ive done alot of work in the bike racing scene but none in the cars or drifting.

cheers louis
