first drift day at the pod! Advice??

'allo driftworks!
i've wanted to get into drifting for a while now, ya know, sittin round saying i'll do it one day, and doing sod all about it!

Well i've got my car, mx5 mk1 1.8 (good cheap starter car? to late now, i've bought it!) and started tweaking with it abit. AND im booked on the DWYB at santa pod on 14th may!

Im looking for any bits of advice you can pass my way, mainly the best first mods to make. How many tires should i bring? anything like that would be a help.
cheers
roll on may 14th...

Go out, clutch kick and have fun

Its pointless giving you pointers as when you first start drifting, you will panic and forget what we told you lol.

Take as many tyres as you can

Only pointers I would give, is if you spin out and travel backwards, pull the handbrake, it stops you faster and take as many tyres as possible.

As for mods, my mate has a stock 1.8 mx5 and it skids alot better than i thought it would. As long as it already has a decent lsd, id work on the suspension, try and stiffen it up with some shocks, springs and anti roll bars.

Is it an import? If so, it'll probably have a torsen LSD which is great for starting out. If it's a UK car then chances are it'll have an open diff which might not be ideal. I've not tried skidding one of these on an open diff. If you struggle then maybe seeing about getting a LSD or welding your open diff might be an idea, but try it out first and see how you get on.

Otherwise some half decent shocks, and maybe a bucket seat and you'll be well away.

It just so happens I have some Tein shocks and a Cobra bucket seat for sale in the parts section

I'll be at DWYB next month in my car, which is very similar to yours. Come and say hi!

4 spares is probably enough, and you can buy extra tyres at DWYB if you run out. The hardest thing is fitting them in the car.

I've got some buckets on order, should have them in time, and some ratchet straps so i can stack the boot with tyres.

is the car a daily driver or mainly to be used for drift?
if it is for drifting, then sort the diff by welding or replacing before you take it out in may as you will just get annoyed and get no-where with an open diff...

With an open diff you'll need serious commitment to get some drift action....see if you can get it welded , and maybe pick up a spare incase you wanna go back to open-gayness..

oh man, i hadnt thought the diff would be that much of a problem!
The cars not a daily driver, just a weekend toy. So i was planning to get an lsd at some point, but not straight away... a welded diff wont be much good on the road i guess, i've still got to drive a couple of hours to and from the track.

I'll look into getting a lsd before i go, if its gonna be that hard to drift if keep the standard one.
just more money... oh well

A welder won't stop the car from being driveable at all, its just when parking etc you get some funny looks as it skips about, normal size roundabouts etc you don't notice it. If you've got the money you could just get an LSD though if you'd rather keep it nice to drive normally at weekends, but yeah definately sort something before you go drifting or the car will be holding you back as it makes it really unpredictable (could grip and straighten up even if your foot to the floor)

Also, have someone or Lex take you out in your car, that'll give you an idea of what it can do. That was the main thing that helped me!!!

to be honest mate, i wouldnt bother paying to go and skid on an open diff. yeah you can slightly if you give it silly ammounts of commitment/its raining etc but your really going to struggle. not what you wanted to hear but it really is a bit of a waste of time.

you might be suprised how cheap you can pick up an lsd for. or just weld it like most people do.

my ex missus had a mx5 eunos, and it skidded fricking great considering! i was very impressed with how well it handled.
