Project Psycho - it will drift, its just not a car

    Hi all,

Im not sure which section this would fall into as its not a drift car, but it will def. drift

This is the reason why I am selling off all my higher power parts that were going to be bolted onto my FC:

One kart with front and rear hydraulic brakes

    One Suzuki SV650 bike

One engine from the SV650 (engine is currently at a bike/car breakers)

I have worked out with the OEM chain ratio if I had kept the same sprockets the top end would be 55mph lol I spent a bit of time working out and sourcing the right rear sprocket needed to get the same top end as the bike with the smaller kart rims, this is what I have gone with, its a 25T sprocket running a 530 chain with a taperbush.

Polished up some spare rims -

    Before

    After

The SV650 does the 1/4 mile in around 11 seconds, the kart might be as fast or faster lol its got a 6 speed semi sequential box, I have gone with the earlier carbed engine, so its easier to start with, runs at around 60bhp, I will swap in the later cams which are higher lift to bump it up to around 70bhp.

The engine will be mounted in the OEM position on the kart frame, I went with the V twin SV650 engine as its quite compact, you will see a lot of 'Gixxerkarts' having to chop the frame and then make it longer to fit an inline 4 engine in, I can simply offset the seat to balance the engine and myself and the kart will still fit in the boot of the car.

I have some newer rims coming with some slicks, they won't be good enough for drag runs due to them probably only having a speed rating of around 100mph, will get some new Dunlop tyres for drag racing.

The 250cc 2 stroke twin cylinder superkarts run at around 90bhp, so it won't be as quick as those, however my engine won't require a £400 rebuild every time I use it!

I will keep posting up bits as and when I get something done, just thought I would show everyone what im up to

Ive called it projet Psycho as I have been classed as 'A1 mental' on a few bike forums

An SV kart has been built before, but not in the UK, so I know its possible, I just need to build it! Sounds rather good

hehe its getting there, here are the bits that I still need to do/get

    530 chain
Idler sprocket needed to tension the chain
    Keyways for the rear axle
    Shift lever
Clutch lever (basically a D ring just under the steering wheel)
    Seat mounting points slightly offset
    Seat mounting kit
    Engine brackets welded onto frame
    Bike battery
Maybe a low pressure carb fuel pump depending on where I put the fuel tank
Side pods - might fit them, still not sure
1 x set of Dunlop tyres with the correct speed rating

Will do I was going to fit a CR250 or a CR500 engine to it, but due to dirt bikes now moving more towards 4 strokes the parts will become less available etc and I got a good deal on the engine + all the parts

Rear hubs arrived yesterday, just need some keyways and a chain and I can get it rolling and take some photos lol

As you can see its powercoated blue, I might repaint it black but will have to see how it reacts to overpainting the powercoating.

Purely so I can say I have contributed to this awesome project!

Out of intrest how much of her majesty's finest did you hand ove for the rolling chassis? Looks like a really well put together bit of kit!!

Last year my public liability insurance said I could let a guy out on track on a quad at Buxton as long as he was on his own.

    Just saying...

You should be fine as long as you use a good etch primer/sealer. Or use synthetic paint, that'll stick to anything.

Thanks for all these great comments guys, I won't be allowed on a normal kart track, I would have to probably wait for the superkart day at the full circuits like Silverstone etc (the 250cc superkarts usually lap faster than most track cars).

With regards to costs, the budget for this project is £1k

Here is something that arrived today which I know should get me a few awesome points, my rims arrived today, going with a 130/210 setup, I have a full set of Mojo D1 tyres for some fun (they will probably burn up quite quickly lol) but these rims have some decent Dunlops on them, I will check the compound but they might be spot on to use for the higher speed runs.

Here is the cool bit........6" dish

Just PMed the guy who built the original sv650 kart, he needed to extend his chassis from the smaller 100cc size to a 125cc size, my chassis is already the longer 125cc chassis (hence it already has the front brakes due to the extra power they have.

Here are some photos of his build:

If your ever after mental power there is a Ducati coming out this year with 195hp and thats a twin too although I doubt you would get traction anywhere lol

Yeah, this engine is pretty reliable and parts aren't that expensive, the pistons have the same specs as the 'Busa pistons so can be swapped over if I wanted to go oversize or run lightweight parts, there are a few mods I can do on this engine, main issue comes at about 90bhp I think where the crank can snap lol

The engine isn't really ment to be a crazy high reving engine like a 2 stroke, its got a lot of torque instead so I don't need to massivly rev it to get the power lol

The engine is the earlier carb model and I will be running velocity stacks, the cams will be changed at some point to the later higher lift cams and I believe that the ignition can be advanced by about 6 degrees to get a bit more power top end.

With regards to traction, the 250cc 2 stroke twin cylinder superkarts are at around 90bhp and seem to be near the limit of drivable power, there is no point going massive power if im not able to get the power down onto the track lol

There is an SV1000 engine though, but that will be for another time lol im pretty sure 60-70bhp in something that doesn't weigh much more than the engine should shift quite well

Fit a line lock to allow you to do burnouts for drag runs or you'll have no heat in the tyres = no grip = slow times.

    Pic by me

Yeah ive seen some of those higher power karts, I might build one at some point, the issue being is the space required to carry that kart to the track - I don't have a trailer and don't really plan on getting one, the kart chassis I have fits in the boot of my car, to run the inline 4 engines like the kart above would need to fit it behind the driver and the chassis needs to be made longer etc.

Its something I will probably look into at some point, but im keeping with the standard sized chassis for the time being due to transportation restrictions, also its a bit more fun to try and work with limitations

Ive found that my rims and tyres are from a 125 gearbox class kart, so they are pretty good, the superkarts run on a 6" rim rather than a 5" rim, so I might look at getting a set for drag racing, will probably be too scared to go past 3rd anyhow lol

I have just done a mini mockup, I was going to fit the rear axle but it needs a clean to fit it through the rear bearings (very very tight fit) and I also need some pegged keyways for the rear disk and sprocket as well as the rear hubs.

Here is a first look at the kart (without the side pods or front or rear bumpers etc)

I moved the chassis up inline to where the rear hub would support the rear rims, clearance is about 1"

I know everyone likes a bit of camber, so for fun :

As I know everyone here likes lock, here is the straight shot:

    Full left

    Full right

I just need to sort out how to move the kart around due to the extra weight with the engine it will be and how wide it is etc here is the plan to load it into the car:

    1. Remove front stub axles (held on with 1 bolt each side)
    2. Put some wooden runners in the boot of the car
    3. Put boot lip protector on
    4. Lift front of kart onto lip
    7. Lift kart and push mostly into boot
    8. Remove rear wheels and hubs
    9. Push the rest in

Due to the suspension towers in the boot the front hubs won't clear and I can't really lift them over due to the engine and steering wheel possibly hitting the roof. The rear axle is about 1" shorter than the boot opening, so that will go in ok, just not with the rear hubs.

Im really tempted to sell my FC3S at some point and buy a larger estate with a massive engine so I can race that as well as just rolling the kart into the boot lol I did find a Mercedes E55 AMG that im tempted with, massive boot space, high power for some fun drag runs lol

I will see how it goes I guess! I might have to store the kart outside somewhere as it will be quite heavy with the SV650 engine on, its just akward so I might have to get a small shed for it or something.

What colour do you guys think I should run this kart in? I am wanting to change the bright blue as its a bit...blue lol I am going to get some side pods and I do have the chrome rear bumper etc which I havn't fitted yet.

My plan is to maybe run the side pods and nose in black/matt black and then wrap the frame in hazard tape (ie black and yellow) the yellow will match the undertray, what do you guys think? I can simply just wrap the tape around the tubing lol

This is the tape I am suggesting:

    Opinions? Suggestions?

I am also tempted to maybe run it in a dark green and run teeth on the sidepods like on WW2 aircraft:

Its getting there, need to get the engine to mine so I can clean that up, then I will get engine brackets sorted and get the engine mounted, it will just be the case of wiring everything up and connecting bits lol

When I sat in the seat it actually felt quite secure, even though there are no harnesses or anything lol
