Just get an E46 320/318d. They do a lot of miles if someone took care of it.
Mercedes C220cdi also a good choice. A bit wobbly but at least RWD and reliable.

But why diesel? To me a cheap reliable car has a petrol engine. E36 FTW. :)

I'm 320D hunting for my Mrs at the moment, there's plenty of relatively decent ones around for under £3k.

She's fussy as fuck though, now looking at autos because she's decided changing gear is too hard

Honestly (and bare with me) my Peugeot diesel was the most reliable car I've ever owned. Granted it looked like a pile of **** but for a cheap, useful daily I couldn't fault it.

With your budget you could easily get a decent E46 320D Touring with a decent spec. I know the swirl flaps are an issue on the E46 diesel range but I don't know if the 20d is included in that. You'll have a comfortable cheap daily that still looks really smart.

My old 325 2.5 TDS was a great car. Would happily do 50 mpg on the motorway cruising. 20k miles is not a lot though and you could get yourself a small engined petrol and get in the 40's. At least it will sound better.

+1 On the 320d. I've got an e46 330d and love it but the 20 is just that bit more eco.

Got a chipped 330d touring. I get 53-55 on average. 210bhp and bags of torque. Love it but I want a pick up

Never heard the 320 being more Eco thst a 330. Most bm forums moan that the 330 gets more.

Im confused, you want a cheap reliable diesel for sub 3k but NOT VAG. All of the best choices in that criteria are VAG. early 1.9 PD TDi engines are amongst some of the BEST diesel engines ever made.

Oh really? What sort of driving gives you that average? I'm only managing 40mpg(ish) average. Even on a long motorway run through France. Who did the map?
I always assumed the 320 would be better on fuel..but it was just an assumption.

Its probably tuned the lazy way by just turning up the duration maps by a percentage which tricks the MFA into thinking its using less fuel. 320d can see in excess of 60mpg with a proper tune and that's calculated

Speak to anyone who has had a blown head.
I know 4 ppl who have all replaced the heads on theirs. A non pd 1.9 tdi yes, but pd? No way.
I have a 2.0 tdi and guess what? I just replaced the head because of no less than 6 cracks so that why I dont want a vag car. Not to mention the throttle body that needs replacing now.....

I didnt say the 2.0. I said the early 1.9 PD before they went mad on emissions, the 2.0s are mostly shit.

Had a 53 plate Passat 1.9tdi Pd115. Was on 260K miles when I sold it and it purred away and pulled well.
First time I've heard anything bad said about the PD
