Drift day Oulton Park Aug 2nd

Trackaction-online is running a drift event at Oulton on Saturday August 2nd

There are two different courses to play on, free instruction and spectator entry into the race meeting that is running on the main circuit all included!

The tarmac is designed for drifting so it's very low friction and pretty easy on tyre wear - perfect for beginners but plenty of challenges for the more experienced guys as well

Booking is available here - Trackaction Online - Cart: Oulton Park 2nd August 2008 Drift Day

Post up if you are going

So far we have Terry Pankhurst and Nick Beaumont.

Terry used to rally to international standard and is is a regular instrutor at the MSV drift and rally schools; he's been involved with developing the handling characteristics for car simulations on console games and he is well known for building the 500bhp RWD Dimma Peugeot 206 Cosworth .

Nick is a sucessful circuit racer and Chief instructor at Oulton Park and as an S grade ARDS instrutor he will be running the day. There will be one other instructor yet to be confirmed but will no doubt be up to the same standard .

Suggest MSV to get to some of there Palmersport/EDC drivers up there instructing, that'd drum up a bit more business from this end.

They tend to use the regular Oulton instructors as they know the course better and how to get the best out of it.

£140. Is it on the actual track? or the car park? What are the queues like?

Is there tyre changing facilities there?

Oulton Park's Stage 1 tarmac rally course.

Whats the score with this track, does anyone know what it means for skidding? do you get much grip out of the surface or is it like drifting in the rain or something?
Great to see more venues up for holding drift days.

It's not on the paddock or car park, there's two courses that were built just to be used for drift and rally training.

This is one......

and this is the other......

You can't see the full course in either photo, they each take about 1 minute to lap with a variety of curves and tighter bends.

In terms of grip - there isn't much! The course is designed to be easy on the tyres, the feedback that we've had from previous events is that unless you are very low on tread at the start then you won't need spares, probably a lot like drifting in the rain!

We are restricting numbers to about 26 cars, we can have 3-4 cars on each course at any one time so queues should be pretty short. The aim is plenty of tracktime for everyone.

TBH, this is probably a bit different from a typical drift event but the courses are great fun to drive and have enough variety to make a full day's entertainment! I was instructing there in the Caterhams recently so I can tell you first hand how good it is

If we can get a group of drivers (5+) then the price can be dropped to £120.

How fast is the track. Looks really tight. Just wanting to know what the entry speeds are.

The tracks look like a good laugh, especially that top one with a few gradients in there (I think?). Is it these ones:?

Might be wrong but they look longer than most drift practice days so worth paying a bit more for ? Can you hold 3rd gear or more drifting around the majority of it, be interesting to see what the surface is like though!? maybe what you could save in tyres would make up the extra price to some extent? 3 or 4 cars at a time should keep the queues down as well. At double the price of the average practice day it would need to offer something more for the money. Lydden Hill is £125 and thats 3rd/4th gear 100mph entries on nearly every corner. Less seat time , but you couldn't manage anymore seat time as you're always changing tyres anyway! These look quite long so will be good fun. I'm sick of short one hit runs at drift days.
I quite fancy having a go at these ones, no way I could afford the next one though.

I attend the MSV in house version of this once a month and its good fun

some pics

David Lenagh's Photos - oulton park 06/06/08 | Facebook

you'll not come out of 2 gear lads theres loads of challenges to sort out on the track and because its a bit slower you can play with your technique.

Last event i went to there wasn't many people there and despite the surface I had to calm it due to being able to just go round and round and round non stop

It was the first time they've ever run it without wetting the track last month and it was the best time by far. I think they are trying to run this event alongside noisy days to get away with the tyre squeel.

Its no where near the speeds of the silverstone skid pan or pod but then its on my door step its seat time and low impact on the car.

Highly recommend it for a play.

Reading his note owent he only needs five people to get it down to 120 which is a fiver less than MSV charge.

Are you going to wet the track though ?

Found an old vid of the section with the trees to give people an insight.

When its wetted as in that vid its a pig for understeer as its already polished tarmac as it is

As you can see its slow, low risk low impact loads of time if your new to the game to figure out what the hell you doing with feet hands etc.

Hi fellas

I'll just try to answer a few of the questions that have come up.....

When I was working there in the Caterhams we were using 2nd and 3rd gears so it's not very high speed but the car will move out so easily that it doesn't feel slow and you have to get it dead right to link each of the corners together. As you can see from that aerial shot there is a lot to go at and as Royal suggested there are some gradients and dips to add an extra dimension to the driving .

I will have to confirm with MSV but it would be my aim to run without wetting the track - it is better dry and with a race meeting running at the same time there shouldn't be an issue for noise! . They will probably run the normal trackday limit of 105db for the cars but even most Evos will pass that and I assume that the majority of drift events would have a similar limit.

MSV may be running other drift days this year but they do charge extra for passengers etc as well as slightly more for the main event than our discounted rate. We are a track driving enthusiasts forum that is trying to run a few events to allow best price opportunities for fellow drivers so any support that we get will hopefully lead to other events but we can only take things one step at a time! We ran a trackday at Cadwell in March and we are doing another at Oulton in November, if this drift day goes well we may run another one on the same day as the trackday.

TBH, if it will save messing around, it's pretty clear that you guys are serious about the drift scene so we'd love to have some of you there and so I'll just say now that we will offer the discount to regular forum users. I gather that you don't have a paid membership on here so lets say the discount is available to anyone who has made more than 100 posts on the forum - hope that seems fair!

If there are any more questions please shout up or if you would like to come along please post below so we can get a list going and get you booked in

Cheers
