any audio guru's out there please help

Need some help very confused by this. I had an iPhone 4 which I used to play music through my car stereo via 3.5mm jack with no problems. I now have a Sony xperia s which won't play music through the stereo it doesn't even recognise it got a jack plugged in (ie sound still comes from the phone when plugged in)

I have done some googling and apparently xperia s uses some kind of new 3 pin configuration in the 3.5mm jack. So to get this working do I need a special aux cable or is it a software problem with my stereo or is it just never going to work.

Also from what I have read all 3.5mm jacks will be going to this new config which doesn't seem to work with alot of devices including expensive Bose and beats dre headphones so could be handy to look into if no one has a fix yet.

Any help would be great don't really want to have to get a new headunit.

usually if its a 3.5 jack it should just play.
