Video Update on our FD

After a Complete Rebuild, inc a Side port, Turbo O/H, and some engine Parts even "Cryo frozen" its now back in action. Feels somewhat brisk and my rotary tuner says its around 500ps. Not bad as its only running 1 bar. I feel its a great car to drift though im torn between it and my New 600PS JZX100 Mark 2 (More on it soon). Both are great cars and both have there uses. The FD isnt street legal and doesnt qualify for some comps here. Its really just for hoolagnising The JZX on the other hand is Fully Street legal so MSC here we come. D1 SL Divisional series is also a target for this year. And also the bonus of having a full tune street legal drift car is that its also allowed to venture up the mountains for Night time "Sight seeing Tours"

FD Video Update:

30mins - Shakedown at Ebisu, Comp at Nikko, Drift Day at Nikko, In car footage

Also just the incar as its quite long into the first video (7 Mins)

Sounds awesome, can't watch the vids in work just yet but will later.

Any chance you could let me know what you've done to the Rex for drifting? in particular steering lock, suspension, suspension arms (any adjustables needed?) and handbrake mods? I'm in the process of rebuilding my own 500bhp Rex and can't decide whether to drift it or not. It deffo needs a decent handbrake, more lock, and also more caster but maybe you can give it more as standard?

The car was a Time attack machine in its past life so not much is standard. All adjustable arms, regular handbrake (Works a treat), good clutch diff. The usual too make a car get sideways really. Were playing with the rear camber just now but thats more a smoke issue. Ohlines coilovers on it - theyre great.

That gives me hope! one of the most annoying things with my Rex was the useless handbrake but if yours is good then it must just be adjustment or something. I'd love to see a spec list if possible to see what arms and stuff you are using. Thanks for that, sorry to hijack but not many people drift Rex's over here.

I'd also love to know what arms you're using since I can't seem to find any sort of adjustable arm available over here.

Nice driving Andy, your driving has improved a lot. I'd say there was a nice bit of smoke on one of the runs (probably the one where smoke came into the cabin lol). Some externals would be great of a chase car or something.

Bout time you started entering some serious comps Andy, just like Nelo said, you can really see in the vids that you are up the scales now (not that you weren't before) Nice driving

Yeah i dont have many issues with lag. The Rotray Engine allows such large Turbos to spool up soooo well

Many of the top FDs run T78s over here for Drift

Just wondering, at 500ps how many miles would you expect to get out of your FD before it needs another rebuild or other major bits replaced? What kind of power can you push these cars to and still be fairly reliable and when rebuilding can you get stronger rotor tips and apex seals to extend the intervals between rebuilds?

I got about 8000 out of mine before blowing it. They were nearly all high rpm track miles though so thats probably quite good for any track/race car I'd have thought. I've got race seals for the rebuild which cost a small fortune but I'm hoping they might cope well with the abuse. The main advantage is that they don't destroy other parts of the engine such as rotor housings when they pop. I don't think anyone should expect a 500bhp car to last that many miles of hard abuse IMO. Look at proper racers; they seem to rebuild every few races or at least every season.

Thanks but im wondering how long one would last for fast road use, not track use as im looking at getting one but for the road, not the track. Is 500bhp too much? What if it was at 400-450bhp?

It depends on the setup as there is nearly always something that is at its stress limit and in need of upgrading. In my case at 545bph the gearbox is at its limit and blowing every so often. For reliability you need to build a car for say 500bhp and then run it at 400bhp. I think for FDs (and most jap cars for that matter) 500bhp is a point where you need to start spending big wonga to get any kind of reliability. To upgrade my gearbox would cost £3k or more so I just run standard boxes and replace them for £200-350 every so often. I've not met many people that have managed to run a car specced for 500bhp at 400bhp, its just too tempting to pump up the power.
