There were small holes in my sills before winter...but this winter and the grit has totally eaten them Should I replace the entire sill...or weld some plates in? Just need it to pass MOT Its an e36...the problem area is on the drivers side right next to the rear tyre... What d'ya think...?
dude what are you going to weld the patchs to? my guess is youll be half way down the sill before you get anthing solid replace them defo, not been bitchy or nuting im doin the same thing myself atm
definatly replace the lot, I'm willing to bet after you've got in there and chopped out the rot and cleaned it back to decent metal there won't be a lot left of the original sill
hmm im gunna have a go at it with a hammer and air saw at the weekend...see whats solid and whats not...will get more pics up then... a new sill is around £50 which isnt too bad...but i think welding that on would be beyond my skillz
thats a waste of time typing that i would get new sills dynaz s50 them then prime paint and coat in underseal might as well do a proper job so it will last a few years rather then every couple
not really, tbh e36 are uber common, considering you could pick up a second hand car for not much these days if your keeping the car for some time or gona do it up i would start thinking around a reshell. not only will it fetch more money if you ever go on to sell the car because people are sceptical about cars with repairs especialy welding wich can so easily be fucked up and bodged to look right, but like has been said, youl probly end up doing the whole sill which is big, dirty, long job. might be a bit more expensive and take longer doing a reshell but it depends how good you think you are at welding and what you plan on doing with the car . personally id rather spend the money on a decent non rusty shell, and have shit loads of spare parts left over if you ever need them.
so you would not buy a car with welded up sill but you would buy a re shelled car. i have never seen a reshelled car that has been done decent. OP it an e36 drive it till the tax runs out then stick the engine in a 316 assuming its a 325 or above or swap the bits onto your new none abused one.
