Whats the best LSD for drifting in a e30 BMW, just a standard BMW LSD, or aftermarket, and if aftermarket from who and how much? Cheers.
BMW LSDs are gay and low lock, aftermarkets are rare and expensive, weld it for best results. BMW's seem very suited to the welded diff.
KAAZ 2-way LSD centre is available, doubt you'll get better but it's big dollar. MIG 3-way NSD is cheaper, less maintenence, normal gear oil etc unless you're a drift snob of whom just has to have "LSD"...
I'm no 'drift snob' I think that people that drive cars with welded diffs are hardcore, but I want to learn the basic princeibles of drifting using lsd, because doesnt a welded diff turn any cornering into sideways action, I want to learn about weight transfer etc.
Nope, not at all, a welded diff makes the car understeer unless you know how to provoke it. Or if you have loads of power, but E30s don't.

I am going to get the diff welded, but whats it like to drive a welded diff on the road, because the car is my daily drive, I was thinking of putting the weld diff on once a month or so, use it for a week and drift my heart out then, put the open diff back on. What what can I expect, lots of tyre squeel? Tyre damage? or Even drive train damage? Anyone on here use welded diffs on the road as daily drivers? Cheers, Jason.
Changing diffs is a sucky sucky job to do twice a month .. I'd say go with an E30 lsd for a while, see how you get on with it, then weld or spend the money on the Kaaz or uprated diff.. Driving a welded diff daily is a bit of nightmare, and as others have mentioned, it's actually quite difficult to learn in as it will understeer all day without the correct agressive pursuasion
mine doesnt understeer maybe i a missing something having not driven a proper diff but its seems to do the job
For starters practice with the standard LSD, then if you can feel this is holding you back, or it wears out and starts to slip and you want to drive it on the road, then try one of the aftermarket units (KAAZ). A cheap option for a dedicated drift slag would be welding the diff up. Don't ruin a perfectly good LSD though, get a shite open diff to weld up. Also remember that lots of different BMW diffs are interchangable, when you a scouring the classifieds. Look at the various BMW forums to find out which ones.
I am leaving it as a open diff, for now as I am using the car for work every day, It seems to respond well to lift off oversteer anyway, Will have to come to a more permament solution at some stage though. Anybody watched the vid to the guy drifting a e30 with open diff in the media section muchos respect dude.

Well, uhm, thanks dude!! I drive with an open Diff right now. The entrance speed has to be a bit higher, than you can do a drift by 'lift off' of brake in with an open Diff. In the wet, you won't need an LSD to drift. But I want to go racing with the E30, so I need an LSD for traction. Thereby I will go drifting again. This is what we are going to build: - Big diff from an E28 - LSD with plates 25%, upgraded till 50% - 4.10 - Z3M fins for cooling - Hard bushing to fit. Ps. the Vid is in my signature.
have you seen those turbo e30's from sweden and that area.. they have enough power to keep you busy with
