Yes if you do not have power steering.

What's wrong with your rack? You sure it's not just inner track rods worn?

cheers for the quick reply will,

im not sure, they just told me i need to replace steering rack, it has on the advisory notice, nearside and offside rack gaiter split, and steering system has excessive free play detected at the steering wheel.

Also it failed on emissions, they think it running too rich.

Thats the most common problem, try changing thos 1st bud. The mot tester, should av told you , wot exactly is wrong with yr rack, ie. where the play is etc. And wot part of the rack has failed the mot.

with the price of the whole unit costing no more than 60, and the fact the gaiters need replacing, do you think it might be worth just doing the whole lot in one hit ?

You can adjust the backlash between the rack and pinion which will reduce steering wheel play and the knocking sound that can be heard from shaking the wheel.
