BMW Immobiliser I have just put a new engine in my BMW 318 TDS daily drive. I got the engine from a breakers with the full wiring loom and ecu attached. I put everything in and connected it up but once I connected the battery the immobiliser kicked in and alarm kept going off. Does anyone know if the immobiliser is connected to the ecu as I am using the new ecu that came with the engine but with the old key? Thanks

I think it might be something about BMW's and the ignition that is connected to the ECU with something called EWS. You may need that unit too but check a bmw forum just to be sure. The gay bastards at www.bmwowner.com should know.

I have managed to get the car started now by using the od ECU but the alarm keeps sounding and the indicators keep flashing 30 seconds on 30 seconds off (roughly).Does it need the alarm reseting? It goes off sometimes but as soon as you open the door or touch the bonnet reease switch it goes off again.

yea bm's after about sept 95 i think came with their EWS system, and basically its a chip in the remote key and an antenna ring around the ignition barrell which sends the info to the ews control unit. may be something to do with that | |

you got two options get the ews key reader and ews control unit from the donor engine car that matches the ecu or send your now running car with the old ecu to bmw and get them to re allign the ews system. should sort your probs out but will cost at least 1/2 hours labour. the ews system on bmw's is coded to only work with the dme (engine ecu) and so if you swap the ecus around it will not start and sound the alarm. it stops theives carrying around a spare ecu and just plugging in to de immobilise cars. hope this helps.
