I've fitted my RB20DET manual box into my R32 non-turbo (RB20E) and found that the gearbox crossmember doesn't line up with the mounting points on the shell. Instead it sits between 1.5 & 2 inches too far forward! Do I need a different crossmember? I've tried both the auto and manual ones and they're both the same ![]()

yeah i'll be about... I know the R32 Shells are different from Manual to auto, an R32 Auto shell with take an R33 box without modifications, were as you've found out the R32 manual is too short and to narrow. I've never tried fitting an R33 mount to an R32 box to solve this problem as i normal just fit an R33 box outright. But i'm sure the R33 mounting i have will be far closer and less modification requied. I would happlying modify the mount for you if you so need it. Clarkey.

Yes, it is a fact. I used to have a crossmember for an auto gear box and a manual gear box. The crossmembers were noticibly different. Go compare the crossmember from an vehicle with an auto gear box with the crossmember from the same model but with a manual gear box.

So, why is it may i ask when you fit a R33 GTS-T (large casing box) into a Manual car you have to knock back the tunnel a little to get it to clear, and you have to cut and reweld the standard mount... where a Auto shell it drops it with plenty of room and bolts strait up... Just interested to know were i've gone wrong these last 8 years...

If you are talking about putting an R33 gearbox into an R32. Yeah the shells are different. Those two verhicles are different. Plus the engines are different, which in turn makes the bellhousing different. If you are talking about putting an R33 gearbox into an R33, the shells are the same. The crossmembers are going to be different between the same model car. Here in the states several people swap bell housing to make an S14 gearbox fit in an S13. But hey, I am still new to the methods used in Europe so, I can still be wrong.

First off, i'm talking about only the R32 skyline.. I'm not mistaking a R33, i understand the model differneces Talking only about the HCR32 shell. Regardless of engine, RB20DE/RB20DET/RB25DE in the HCR32 the engine finishes in the same place, the crossmembers look the same and will messure the same but the mounting points on the shell are 20mm futher back, 100% on that one ![]() End of the day i know there is a differnece because i actually do the conversions, if you only ever read about it on the interenet then you will only know what they tell you, and tbh alot of people become experts on something they really don't know much about. So you now know that the Shells i.e R32 auto and R32 manual HCR32 shells are different, as are the HNR32 shells (GTS-4), regardless of if all people tell you that the mounting points are different, its a bit more then that, i'm more then happy to note down the dimentions tomorrow and post them as i have both cars in my workshop. We also swap the S13 gearbox's into the RB bellhousings here and use them on the RB20/25/26 de/det/dett engines. (bearing inmind they don't last long on some )Sorry to be blunt but people will search on this info and it needs to be factual. Clarkey. p.s it is the same with the manual to auto R32 box's (i.e auto R32 gearbox converting to manual R32 gearbox) Last edited by superclarkey : 02-09-2008 at 03:03.

No need to post any more information. As I stated in my last post, I can still be wrong. I am glad that there are many individuals with experience with various vehicles. I for one am familiar with the S13 and S14 more than I am with the Skylines. I did forget that there were different models of skylines within the same year. (Four Door and Two door) Thank you for reminding me.

The S13 manual gearbox crossmember looks identical to the R32 one, but is back to front. This should line the 4 mounting holes up with the captive nuts in the chassis nicely I'll keep you posted as i've yet to get the car back onto the ramp and offer it up into position.
