I am pretty sure the FWD is different to the RWD.
The place I'd go to find out for sure is here:SR20 Forum - The essential resource for all things Nissan SR20 on the Web - http://www.sr20forum.com they seem to know a huge amount on engine specifics and interchangeability.

the rear wheel sr engines found in the s-bodys are all indentical (redtop, blacktop straight cam non vvt sr20det and the vvt sr20 engines) but the cranks in the sr found in pulsar (4wd) and bluebirds (fwd) differ significantly

Apart from the head design, inlet manifold and plenum, oil galleries, etc.

Its the exact same bolt and mounting pattern as the CAS - I delighted the assembled crowds with my slight of hand and dexterous doings when I swapped one with the other on my pointless engine

You are correct, the FWD SR20 is different than the RWD SR20 and there are parts that are interchangible between the two.

The biggest difference between the to engines is the location of the distrubutor. If an individual wanted to take the time to modify the firewall he/she could mount a fwd SR20 to the RWD transmission. Considering the number of SR20 engines still around it is easier to get a RWD engine.

cool never said they wouldn't swap over, just ment they are different out of the factory, i know you can put the cas on them as it has the same nose drive and bolt patten.

But i have never done it as no one pays for them engines to be tuned.

is there not a problem when putting FWD engine into a rwd car with oil retrun from the head problems ?

Not in drifting they don't, but I'm told that the Almera and Sunny's are used in Rallying where turbos carry a penalty, doing anything to a DE on a driftcar is pointless as for next to no money you can drop a DET in.

Oil return, the distributor mounting and also the issue of the blocks engine mounting points. The SR20DE in the BTCC cars had external oil return pipes, although I'm not 100% sure if this was because of poor return, or the fact it was mounted at such an extreme angle.

I'm on the lookout for a SR20VE head, which I'd run with a crank trigger.

But to stop this becoming a thread hijack:
SILBEAM81 - I'd bet on the safe side and leave the FWD stuff alone, there doesnt seem to be much difference in the DE and DET blocks of the RWD engines, and there are plenty of them about.
What were you hoping to use a FWD crank/engine for?

Rob
