Ooooooo.k, as far as I understand an N/A Rx7 FC uses a diff case that can also use the same diff from an early MX-5.

What I want to know is, are the early mx diffs LSD or VLSD or Helical or what? Anything I can rob off an early mx diff wise to get one than locks up nicely?

I know there's a few MX drivers here so any input appreciated guys and gals:thumbs:

Early diffs are Viscous, if they're LSD at all. :)
Later 1.8 diffs are Torsen LSD's, and lock verrr nice.

Some 1.6 MX5 diffs are viscous. The 1.8 diffs are bigger and some of them are Torsen.

Dunno which ones swap over though.

Edit - ringer got there first, dammit.

Edit again - just weld it.

early mx5 diffs are piss weak and can break with standard power. This is why so many people throw them away in favour of a 1.8 diff. AFAIK the internals are swappable between the FC and the small-diff MX5s but the casings aren't. Which means that using a 1.8 diff is going to be out of the question. And I wouldn't go anywhere near a 1.6 diff, even for an N/A FC

You should be able to get the idea from the above posts that the early mx diffs are pretty shit! So i am also suggesting that you do not put anything from an early mx into your fc casing. It wont lock any better.

Plus FCs aren't gay, so it may react badly when you slip a little something MX5y in the rear.

Cheers guys, might just weld the frigging thing. Get funny looks when parking it anyway:wack:

I'll still look into it for future reference though. Might be a few parts that are interchangable.

I believe you need the whole casing and the halfshafts

if you have a word with Paul Sheard (01260 279797) He is the man on mx5 .he has built many racecars and knows his diffs/setups well. he may even have some diffs from imports as i dont think you can use the cuscos etc for the race series......really helpful and knowlegable guy.
    cheers parxy:D
