So I needed a cheap realiable daily I could leave standard (lasted a week) to save money driving to work compared to my lifted 4x4 green laner pickup truck.

My mate got given an mx5 by his brother as he owed him cash but he didn't want it so I snatched it up!

The car is a 1999 nb 1.6 with an open diff, after a week of driving to work I took it out for some late night action... It actually did some skids and made me laugh! So I decided to build a little drift car out of it and learn how to slide.

Posting on here for somewhere to store my build pics to be able to look back on once the car is dead... plus I'm sure I will need some advice!

    Cheers, Reece

So the car came with a set of 15 x 8j et unknown fake split rims curbed to fuck but they would do for now, fresh tyres but one was punchered, so repaired that and chucked the wheels on, this gave me 4 spare standard wheels for skidding!
It also has some height adjustable coilovers on it, although they are deffently a cheap ebay jobby but can't complain.

Got the car up on the ramp and to my surprise it was really solid, like no rust or rot anywhere... One wheel arch had been badly rolled so its bubbling up but apart from that it's mint!

The car has 75,000 on it with full Mazda service history with a recent belt change so a spot on base to rip on with. IMG_20190218_153706.

A nice bath, adjusted the ride height, polished the wheels, little stick on plate and it's looking much fresher already.

The sun came out so time to flop the top back... The roof is in bad shape by far the worst bit of the car real brittle, I've already poked my finger through multiple times and everytime its raised a new tear would appear, looking at the price of hard tops fackkkk they are more then what I paid for I car, so it will have to wait!

Tinted the reflectors all round, just doing bits and bobs waiting for parts to arrive!

The next thing it needed to help my slidding was some noise, it had a ebay induction kit on it which wasn't too bad apart from the cheap filter, got it up on the ramp again and deleted the back box, damn that thing was heavy about 10kg.

We cut the tip off to re use and then just straight piped from the centre can.

Thanks to my main man Ian for welding that shit up, honestly really happy with the sound, quite surprised not too loud but sounded raspy and ten times better!

After that pulled the heat shield off and went our for a rip!

Had owned the car about two weeks so time to give it a service, so oil and filter, plugs, fuel filter and did the external belts also chucked a new battery on.
Re-adjusted the coilys as it was scrapin hard and finished tinting the rest of the lights, (brake and indicators) also swapped to leds all round.

Before I picked up the car it had been stood for a year, have put a fair few tanks of fuel through it now and its running sweet as a nut!
Happy with how it's starting to look too.
Actual drift upgrades to come this week! IMG_20190304_115807.

So the hydro is mounted, went really well very happy with the position and how tidy it is, I was worried about the leverage from how big it is making it unstable but its really solid spot on job!
Only one cut in the carpet visable really, if anyone has any tips for tidying that up would appreciate it.

So the other night I locked myself out of the miata... What a f*cking tool!
Thank god the roof was so brittle, literally punched my hand through and unlocked the door haha god I really needed a hard top now but nothing a bit of duct tape can't fix!

So the day after having to punch my way through the soft top... I was heading out for lunch from work when in the rear view mirror an old dude, like really old dude was running up the road after me waving his hands in the air.
I thought this guy is not a fan of my skids haha well I didn't stop and went for food.
Leaving work that night here again is the old dude chasing me down...
So I stopped to see what his beef was and got ready to tell him to go fuck himself but then he bangs on the window and says "i had a mk2 mx5, I wrote it off, do you want a hard top".
I was like YES what colour is it, he says this colour... I was stoked, organised to go pick it up at his house literally 20 seconds away from my work the next day.

To call this hardtop mint would be an understatement, I mean it is literally brand new not one mark on the paint, seals and chrome is perfection inside and out, it even came with the soft cover too.
Still can't belive how lucky I got with this it's mad!

After taking the little 5 out for a proper ragging I popped the bonnet to give it check over and all was good, although I noticed that the metal intake pipping for the induction kit was really hot, so I ordered some of the gold heat tape, I've secretly been desperate to wrap something in that for a while haha I don't think that will be the last of it either..
Not sure how good the stuff is but even if it can lower the intake temp by a degree I'm happy with that.
Wrapped it up at work and chucked on the Ram Air foam filter.
Throttle response improved in comparison to the Chinese bay jobby that came off!
