How to ruin a perfectly good S15 Spec R - Phil

The S15 Spec R, what a sweet car!. This one in particular was particularly tasty. We had a couple of nice surprises when finally having a proper look at it. Number one was a set of upside down Bilstein coilovers, which I’ve never seen on a Nissan before, and the other was a 1.5way LSD, which goes some way to explaining why it was so easy to drift in the short time I drove it.

As much as I loved the car, work had to start on turning it into something really special, so the tools came out, and just like Jonny5 she was disassembled.

Engine, gearbox, diff, and interior and glass all came out, along with a whole load of ‘comfort’ crap that would definitely no longer be needed. Then after a short amount of time checking out all the improvements made to the chassis over the S14, it was time for the fun stuff. Not!!

Nissan apparently deemed the S15 worthy of a different type of sound deadening in some places, which seems to be twice as difficult to get off, with whatever method used. They also thought it necessary to use twice as much of the stuff. So far I’ve spent over 20 hours removing it along with the seam sealer, and I’m still not finished. The pictures show exactly how horrible a job it is, let me assure you it doesn’t look like that now, and it’s nearly back to looking like a mint shell again.

Removing the sound deadening this way has to be THE worst job you ever have to do to a drift car. In an ideal world we’d just pay to have the shell acid dipped, but unless you have a spare grand (which we definitely don’t) it’s worth spending the time to do it this way. You do need to make sure you do a very good job of it if you plan to seam weld and paint the car, as the seam sealer really gets in the way of a good weld if it’s not cleaned out properly..

That’s the end of this filthy job at least. I’m sure the shell will look worse again before it really starts to take shape though. Watch this space for future updates Phil Drifting Smile
