  1. True to its name, the melodic minor scale is used mostly in melodic lines as opposed to chord progressions. This scale is unique among the three types of minor scales because it is different going up than it is coming down. As the scale is played going up, only the third note is lowered. As it is played in descending order, it is played as a regular natural minor scale. That means that coming down, the third, sixth and seventh notes are all lowered.
