Hello people! I've enjoyed browsing all the build threads on here, figured I'd throw my latest creation on here. The first few posts will just be catch up, but at least theres plenty of pics :) Here goes:

Last year I came across this 1969 KE10 (2dr sedan Corolla), fresh from the bushes, for $200.

The car was a mess. It ran, barely. Too much throttle and the car choked itself out on oil and took ages to start again. The car literally didnt have enough power to overcome a garden hose it snagged on the lawn! Even in good shape, the 1100cc powerplant and 2spd automatic are laughable. Then theres the 4 wheel unassisted drum brakes, and worm and sector gearbox. Not an inspiring performer.

The shell was structurally sound in the floors and rockers but just about everything else was garbage cosmetically and functionally.

I really didn't have a decent plan for it until after I was rear ended in my 1970 KE17 (Corolla Sprinter). I decided that while the Sprinter gets a body shell restoration, all the goodies (done up 3tc, AE86 suspension etc) would go into the KE10 for drifting!! Yay!

    Concept sketch of final product:

    As for actual progress:

Cuz the steering box is a tighter better unit from a collapsible column te27 (71-74 Corolla), it doesn't fit with the stuff for a non collapsible KE10 dash mount and such. So I rigged this up right onto the steering shaft itself with a plastic bushing and a little grease. No signal stalk, so I guess maybe I'll put some toggle switches on the dash at some point. Maybe. I like the simplicity.

Pulled a late-nighter in my workshop, and got the car to the track for the first event of the season. I was just doing practice laps, I'm too much of a novice to compete and the car is still way too twitchy to drift properly. Hell of a lot of fun though, and the 3TC makes plenty of power for a 1500lb car!

Things to work on for the next event:

Better rear shocks, a panhard bar, cut the tunnel for driveshaft clearance.

Build firewall between me and gas tank.

Increase steering caster and fit some wider tires on.

Stronger e-brake system. Homebrew hydraulic maybe?

Remove even more weight. Rear window will be gone, trunk floor, maybe some speed holes ahead of the strut towers. The car is already under 1500, I want it at 1400!

Hey hey quit stealin my thunder :p

Tracks are pretty lax about cages here and I am glad because honestly for what we are doing, I don't think they are really necessary. We're not going any faster than autocrossers on the track. I'm in a short geared car and rarely getting out of 2nd. In a 500hp car on a road course... sure. Bouncing around on a 1/4mile oval not so much.

    Anyways, more catchup thread:

After this, my friend Serge cut some holes in the hood... I cut up some 86 control arms and lengthened them 2in. The result, May 20

Car had more steering lock, more camber, more caster. Great success.

Schools out, no job, now I get to play with Corollas whenever I want. Over the last couple days I have:

*Fixed the ebrake with new cables, and took the spring out of the handbrake so the ratchet only works when you pull the button out by hand.

    **Finished painting the hood,

***Did some ghetto flaring of the front fenders to fit 14s. The wider less pos offset rims should give me some more steering feedback/self steer. And they give me more lock cause the tires don't hit the frame rails right away. I relocated the brake hardlines so they don't rub on the tires. Now I'm at about 50deg max angle from straight. I had to cut about 6in out of the fender to fit the 14s with 185/60 tires. They look hilariously big on the car.

    ****Removed some more weight.

Thanks for all the good words, and thanks for throwing the build up on the front page!

Pretty much stock 3t (1800cc) inside just bored out .5mm. Mikuni 40mm sidedrafts off of a 2tg, some old 4-1 header, fidanza flywheel. Timing advanced a bit too much. I don't think it's pushing crazy hp but it sounds mean and has decent torque.

Theres no difficulty getting the thing sideways by just stomping the gas, but keeping it there is a chore, its a spastic little car with a slow steering box and squishy leaf springs in the back. Helluva lot of fun though! I like a challenge.

Oh right.. the weight. I haven't weighed this car, but a stock KE10 is supposed to be 1587lbs. The drivetrain and suspension swap adds about 100lbs( would be more for a stock 3tc but the header, carbs, and flywheel bring it back down). To save weight I removed the interior (from sound deadening to headliner), the side windows and door hardware, the heater box and controls, the bumpers, spare tire, jack and toolkit... I figure Its down to about 1550lbs
