Right I have been on this Forum for years and have never put up a project thread so please excuse me if my first one is a little rubbish So I started drifting years ago in various pieces of old RWD Fords (Warning Im a bit of a Ford head at heart!) and then got my first proper drift car that I actually spent some money on to try and make it a bit decent at skidding, This was that car: Did reasonably well in that car but then a combination of thinking 'What the fuck are you doing drifting a rather mint MK1 Escort for' and seeing BonBon in action in his R32 in Punchestown led me to buy this about 2 years ago: A rather tatty looking but quite well specced R32 powered by a RB20. So my first port of call was to make it look a bit smarter so a pair of rear overfenders, a new bonnet and a lick of paint(cheers Dad) later it looked like this I did a few more little tweeks to it and got it stickered up and then done as much drifting with it as I could afford with it: So the last event I did was Prodrift in Fermoy last year where I did ok but nothing spectacular, so at the end of the season I decided to start gathering a few parts to give it a bit more power. But then in Febuary I left my job which unfortunatley led me to put the car up for breaking but due to the fact that it seems no-one has any money these days nothing really sold so with a little inspiration from my freinds I have decided to put my new parts on and do as much drifting as my budget will allow and generally just have a laugh! I will try and post updates as I go along to let you know what I am up to!
Right so as it stands I have the head off to fit a MHG for a bit of added reliability, so that should be going back together soon just waiting on a couple of other bits i need. While I was waiting for these parts Today I decided to start ripping out some stuff that wasnt needed, namely the complete HICAS system and the carbon cannister. I have been wanting to get rid off this stuff for ages as It is usless to me know and all it does is clutter up the engine bay and add weight. I was actually suprised at the weight of the HICAS stuff, it was pretty weighty!
Right so this is the Turbo I am fitting to the RB20, Its a HKS GT2535 .64 exhaust housing in RB fitment. It took me bloody ages to find a decent RB fitment turbo as I wanted something a little bigger than the 2530s everyone seems to fit to them I have also got a set of GTR injectors that I have just had cleaned and flow tested along with a brand new resistor pack to wire in. Now I have got to get some kind of an ECU, anybody got any suggestions? I havent got alot to spend so I am kinda looking at the lower end of the market maybe some thing like a E-manage blue or Nistune?
Hey matey hope things are good Nice choice of turbo good for around 360bhp i ran a HKS2540 at 368bhp with same sort of mods As for ecu's if i were to do it again i wouldnt have brought my fc, Richard at Rising sun performance can re-map the standard ecu's give em a bell, when the time comes
Cheers mate! I would be delighted with anywhere around 360bhp. How is your car coming along? I am gonna have to think about the ecu situation, everyone says something different!
I am waiting for a few gaskets and bits and pieces to arrive so yesterday I mounted the Exhaust manifold on the head and the turbo on the manifold Just a quick pic of the head surface I had about 2 thou skimmed off it just to make sure it was perfectley flat to seal with the metal gasket niceley. So I'm just waiting for the inlet manifold gaskets to arrive and then I can build up that with the GTR injectors and wire in the resistor pack. Oh ya I also modded the GTR injectors to suit the RB20 plugs.
maybe worth trying megasquirt management so you can ditch your maf? my mate has megasquirt on his rb20 and running 450bhp in an s13. heres his thread.... http://www.driftworks.com/forum/drift-car-projects-builds/82728-my-rb20det-s13-daily-fun.html
Cheers mate. I will have a look at that. I think alot of rs turbo boys run mega squirt. The conflicting reports you get from people about ecus is mad, if I was to go on them alone I don't think I would ever be able to pick one!
well the beauty about the megasquirt is its universal so once installed and working correctly you could run anything! ie low or high impedance injectors, any coilpack you wanted etc, any sensors, you just have to programme it, and theres loadsa advice and help on the megasquirt forum, plus you can email the owner of the company who designed and built it and he will actually return emails and is very helpful!
check out DIYAutoTune.com Megasquirt Kits / Assembled Engine Management Systems, Wideband o2 Sensor Systems and tuning products and allow a small fee for import tax when considering it, you want either a MS2 or MS3 really, anything older is harder work to map lol there are companys in the uk that will build you one for your spec but cant remember who these are. you could always pm m.d. and speak to him about his
So yesterday I started wiring in the GTR resistor pack for the injectors. My first time doing any soldering and it work out top notch But then I ran out of single core so that stopped proceedings for a bit. After chatting with one of my mates last night though I'm having a bit of a re-think, see at the moment I'm pretty skint so I'm starting to think maybe I should put it all back together with standard turbo and injectors as by the time I have got an ecu, Z32 AFM mapping etc, I will easily be looking at having to spend another 1k on the car which at the moment I could do with putting towards other things. Also I'm thinking that it might be a better idea to put that money towards doing a couple of events and getting some seat time insead. Oh well we will see
